Meet Robbin Turner | Founder & Botanical Formulator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robbin Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robbin, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Violet Botanical Skincare sources roughly 90 percent of its ingredients from a vendor who works with rural harvesters in Botswana, southern Africa. The harvesters are predominantly women. It allows them to earn an income for their families and help break the chains of poverty. That is why the United Nations call shea butter, “Women’s Gold.”
Another one of our vendors works with small family farms in the Philippines to source our organic coconut oil. The farmers harvest it the traditional way, by hand, and that helps sustain community family farms.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Violet Botanical Skincare was born out of a desire to help my family’s dry skin issue due to eczema. I wanted to find a cleaner alternative to our skin care that didn’t involve harmful toxins and petrochemicals. I found that alternative in pure plant-based ingredients, my grandmother’s remedies, and African formulations passed down from generations.
What sets us apart from others is that I’m passionate about educating people on the importance of clean eating and living for healthier skin, being mindful of the effects of product overload, and understanding skin care ingredients. I believe in full transparency and will give you an honest answer to your question, not a sales pitch.
Any entrepreneur will tell you that it’s not easy building a business, especially when you’re bootstrapped. You learn to deal with the challenges as they come and try not to let them overwhelm you.
A valuable lesson I’ve learned along the way is to find what works for you. Many people will give you advice (solicited and unsolicited), recommend the best way to do things or how everybody’s doing things. At the end of the day, you have to figure out what’s the best way for you and your business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would take her to the beach, Kenneth Hahn Park for a nice hike, Griffith Park for the views, and we’d eat at home. I enjoy cooking at home and experimenting with new recipes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my husband who supports me and always has time to listen, when I need an ear to discuss ideas or vent frustrations. My son and mother who encourage me daily. And my maternal grandmother who taught me so much more than I ever realized when I was a youngster constantly under her feet chatting away.
