Meet Robert Combs | Designer & Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Combs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Doing something you’re truly passionate about helps determine what you want to do for a career. Never did I think my craft would become a career until all of a sudden it did. I started to mess around with Diecasts cars while I waited for the east coast winters to pass and when spring time came along I realized I didn’t stop. I started to dive deeper into the hobby so much that it took over my life. When I realized there was a community of Diecast customizers that started to come to me for advice I knew I was on the right path. I then knew I wanted to take this talent I had to the next level. That’s when I decided to create KHW RACING. I specialize in creating replica historic race cars. This created an interest in the car community that allows me to meet many amazing individuals. We have been able to create 1/64 scale replicas of our clients ride, which are their pride and joy. So I’d have to say my thought process behind starting my own business was to do what I loved doing all while making people smile along the way. Today we have been able to start a wonderful journey that makes clients part of the KHW family.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We specialize in creating 1/64 scale race cars and dioramas. We start with a normal Diecast car of your liking and completely dissect it. This allows me to customize every part of the vehicle. We’re talking new seats, steering wheel, hand made roll cages and so much more. We apply water slide decals to match a historical race car and slap some new wheels to match the 1:1 car. After we clear it we mount it all back together resulting in a beautiful Diecast model car to showcase. Many people mess around with these little cars but what sets us from the rest is making exact replicas in such a small scale.
Everyday I’m faced with a new challenges, whether it’s human error or just the daily vibe. Doing this takes many hours of dedication, so I try to stay as sharp as I can to constantly learn new tricks. No matter how many cars I work on I will always find something new to incorporate into these build. I have to remind myself that this is my passion and no matter how hard something might be I will only sharpen my talent by staying true to myself.
Being able to do this full time has allowed me to work with my hands anytime of the day or even late into the night. Once I start I just can’t stop, but I do allow myself to take all the time needed so we can have the best quality for our clients. We believe in
“Quality Builds for Quality People”
Patience is a virtue, don’t rush! Take a deep breath and plan accordingly. It will be your biggest reward in the end. Stay true to yourself and don’t stay in the lines. Do what makes your soul happy. It is a toy at the end of the day.
I’d like the world to know that KeepHotWheelin is more than Diecast, it’s a lifestyle. It’s the way we stick to a goal and to never give up! We are all faced with daily challenges but just know we are all on the same team and we are all KeepHotWheelin.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d have to say we will start by checking out one of my favorite spots in DTLA, Idyllic which is a car/fashion inspired coffee shop. I enjoy spending some time there to plan out my week. Next we’d hit Casita Del Campo for some Mexican food and drinks. Careful cause their drinks are strong, but we enjoy that. After that we would swing up to Porsche Santa Clarita to visit their Wunderground. This is a special place because they showcase many historical and famous Porsches. It always get my creative juices flowing. After we take in those beautiful rides I’d take the PCH down to enjoy the sunset. Fun fact, I moved here from the east coast, so ending any day by the ocean is good with me.
Did I mention we would go to Motoring Coffee to get a night cap espresso?!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d have to say my supporters deserve all the credit. I wouldn’t be where I am today with out the constant love and support. I want to thank my team which consists of graphic designers, 3D print designers and my sponsors. I’d like to thank my beautiful lady for believing in me and pushing me to do my best. I truly wouldn’t have taking this to the next step with out everyone that has our back. So thank you!
Shout out to my idols, Daniel Arsham, Mia Ikuzawa, Magnus Walker and Mike Giant.
