We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert, what inspires you?
I find my greatest inspiration in the creativity and process of other photographers. I’m particularly drawn to how they approach their craft such as choosing the perfect location and timing, deciding between artificial and natural light, selecting wardrobe and poses, and even determining the ideal lens focal length. Photography is a delicate balance of countless factors, all working together to create a compelling image. Watching how others experiment and bring their visions to life deeply inspires my own portrait and editorial photography.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is deeply rooted in storytelling and capturing authentic moments. What sets me apart is my dedication to creating images that evoke emotion and connection, blending the technical aspects of photography with a genuine understanding of my subjects. I strive to make every portrait feel personal and timeless, whether through the use of film photography or a carefully crafted editorial shoot.

The journey hasn’t been easy, and like many artists, I’ve faced self-doubt, creative blocks, and the challenge of standing out in a competitive field. However, I’ve learned to embrace these challenges as opportunities to grow. By staying committed to my vision and being open to learning, I’ve built a body of work that feels authentic to me.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is the importance of patience and persistence. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, and every challenge is a step toward something greater.

What I want the world to know about my photography is that it’s rooted in passion and intention. My goal is not just to create beautiful images, but to tell stories that resonate and leave a lasting impression. Whether through portraiture or editorial photography, my work reflects a love for the craft and a desire to connect with others on a deeper level. My journey is still unfolding, and I’m excited for what’s to come.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were to show my best friend around town, I’d start the day with a breathtaking sunrise from an overlook in Malibu or Topanga, where the views are simply unforgettable. From there, we’d stop by the Malibu Farmers Market for a quick coffee and a freshly baked pastry. After fueling up, we’d cruise down the Pacific Coast Highway, soaking in the stunning coastal scenery before spending some time relaxing on the beautiful Malibu beaches. To wrap up the day, we’d head to Little Tokyo and enjoy a comforting, flavorful bowl of ramen.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I discovered my passion for portrait photography through photographing my girlfriend, Ashley. Together, we shot countless rolls of film, which not only deepened my understanding of photography as an art form but also helped me refine my skills. These shared experiences not only improved my craft but also strengthened our mutual love for film photography.
