We had the good fortune of connecting with Roberto Maiocchi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roberto, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
One of the main reasons for starting to work as an independent contractor was to regain ownership of time. The regular schedule of the office was conflicting with the freedom of diving into a project during moments of creative inspiration or taking a pause to reflect and contemplate before jumping into action. I don’t have a clear separation between work and personal life. The balance shifts depending on priorities. In this way I am more concentrated and productive when I work because I feel I have taken care of other personal and family needs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of my biggest personal challenges has been to find a balance between left and right brain. I have a background in computer science and software engineering but I have always been interested in applying my skills to applications in the arts. During a Masters Program at UCSD I did independent studies in 3D animation with a professor in the Visual Arts Department, which then led me to work on some of the most advanced projects in the field in video games and film. With my business partner we developed groundbreaking animation software than earned us a technical Emmy. Later I started working on web technology in collaboration with various artists and institution including the Rubin Museum of Art in NYC,  the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation, and the Beastie Boys. I feel blessed to be involved in both technical and artistic projects and continue being stimulated creatively.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are too many to mention! But the people most deserving of a shoutout are my wife and daughter for the love and support in my journey.
