We had the good fortune of connecting with Robin Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ask most folks in the Arts and they’ll give you the same answer ” It’s a calling ”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Most creatives come from families that say be “practical” and in paying no heed we find our community.
Doing what I do is collaborative & engaging within that community inevitably leads to discovering new plays to help develop and keeps me in touch with actors of all ages. I have directed and produced scores of new material in this way. e.g. At The Actors Studio next month I will directing a brilliant new play Vincent Marano’s “Ghetto Kaddish” I am thrilled ..
I also have a local 1/2 hour NYC MNN TV show called Badass Women 50+ ( find us on YouTube ) which I began during the shutdown The platform features actresses , photographers, novelists, filmmakers most of whom had prior careers but changed horses in midstream. These are gals who like myself favor a challenge..
As to challenges, it’s the prefrontal Cortex that helps us problem solve. and we all have this power , setbacks ( which I’ve had many ) are temporary roadblocks thus I don’t give in to self blame and inevitably come up with a new ideas. Never indulging in feeling sorry for myself is taboo, it’s my biggest life lesson
My Instagram page Robin Lane is Always Right is relatively new. I am also a Licensed Psychotherapist in private practice but to democratize my expertise in relationship guidance I put out free 1 minute videos 3x a week. My friend Actress/Filmmaker Maria Soccor just went before the United Nations taking about sustainable productions that leave no carbon footprint and gave me and what I do serious mention.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am in Miami ( till late May ) as I am art’s focused I can’t talk about Everglade Airboat rides but I can advise that this city is rich in Latin culture. I take my friends to the Perez Art Museum, always walk around Wynwood Walls ( Google it) so cool.. the Living Room at the Fauna has hot live music and a really hip crowd.. Last night I attended a play at Miami New Drama . one of the few multi lingual theater companies in the Nation.
People watching -Miami is an outdoor city and there are lots of scantly clad beautiful people everywhere .
.
Outside cafes and bars are plentiful and most are under palm trees and until you’ve imbibed a mojito, pisco sour or a chichi here you don’t know what you’re missing.. Same goes for ceviche, mofongo, or even a simple Cuban sandwich.
The other must I swear by is Cuban coffee . I have one every day , love introducing it to my friends and will miss this strong sweet espresso when I go back to NYC.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Lady Luck for starters . I’m 90 & born a risk taker. This led to meeting an endless array of folks some of who would inevitably point me not in the right direction & some walk me there. Your younger readers might be unacquainted with the great Joe Papp who established The Public Theater, or Theodore Mann of Circle in the Square or Playwright/Director/Actor Michael Gazzo ( Godfather Part 11 ) Lees Strasberg of The Actors Studio , legendary impresarios all. Each helped and guided me.
