Meet Rochelle Ivory: Creator and CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rochelle Ivory and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rochelle, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
It was after I had my daughter (2 year old Rhyann) and I was using the same boring and basic edge brushes on her that I thought, what if this tool I and many others use everyday, looked better, felt better using. What if it was capable of creating some sort of vibe or sparking creativity. It seemed odd I was getting those thoughts in my head. But now i know why. With that idea I came up with a sketch. And when I started thinking about colors for my brushes, I was actually wearing a bandanna around my head and it just clicked.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
ON THE EDGE BABY HAIR(TM) edge brushes are a line of functional and fashionable baby hair styling tools. We pride ourselves on putting a new spin on an old tools. I know we ladies love our toothbrushes. Put I just wanted to provide a tool comparable that actually works and looks good too. Our edges brushes are one of a kind. WE have a patented design and they come in bold colors and pattern to match any vibe. I am most proud about launching during a pandemic with no previous experience in creating a product from scratch. This road was not easy. There were moments I wanted to give up. But I just remembered my why, my kids, teaching them they can do anything they put their minds too. It was time i followed my own advice. I used the resources I had and crawled over and under those challenges. I’ve learned that when you have a plan you can pretty mush do anything.
I would want the world to know that ON THE EDGE BABY HAIR cares about your edges. lol No really, stylish edges deserves stylish brushes. No more basic brushes! But more than that, this come from a black woman and mom from Compton CA that styles her edges every day.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let’s see. Roscoes is always a good go-to for visitors. But we’d definitely also hit up a rooftop brunch like The Perch Downtown LA. Or any place with bottomless mimosas. lol Here in Compton we have a new coffee shop called Patricia’s that we are loving. My favorite go-to is Mexican food. Here in Compton we’ve had an influx of Birriera trucks. (red shredded beef) One of the trucks I personally love is Birriera Barajas. Their tacos are amazing. And if you want to venture out, Teddy Reds Tacos are awesome as well. I’ve gone to Toca Madera a few times and its always a good vibe there on the Westside.
We love a good hookah bar but when COIVD happened they all shut down. I found Spark It Up Hookah, a black-owned hookah delivery place. They will deliver hookah pipes and all the fixings to your home. They are absolutely great. Great service and great people.
For people watching or exercising, hiking at Runyon Canyon or Kenneth Hahn Park. And Venice Beach is always cool.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I of course wouldn’t have started if not for the support of my amazing family and friends. They motivate and congratulate me at every turn! My husband for his patience. There are long days and nights where I just need to focus and work. My sisters and mom who are so proud of me and support me in any way they can. And my core group of friends that hype me and act as a sounding board whenever I need it.
But it wasn’t until I joined this Launch and Grow Mastermind, lead by co-mentors Gina Woods and Amber Success that I really felt like a business owner. This group is comprised of other women business owners, many who have created their own product. All at different levels of our businesses. We share highs and lows, resources, and we push and challenge others. if I’m having issues with something I can go to them and chances are, one of them has gone through it and can help me.
