We had the good fortune of connecting with Coach Cat and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Coach, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
The customer is always right.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Cats Club Fitness Inc is on a mission to bring science back to the forefront of the fitness industry. I know that sounds like a “duh” statement but the average person isn’t certified to run their own fitness plans. That’s what sets my gym apart from the others. Cat’s Club Fitness has a resident fitness coach on hand to assist each member, at no additional cost. It’s included and available by request with each booking. The days of going to the gym and trying to figure things out on our own, is over. Each gym should have a few professional coaches on hand to assist members. Not only does it boost motivation; but it will educate members so they’re eventually advanced in basic anatomy, kinesiology, nutrition and sport biomechanics.
I’m most proud and excited to have this unique opportunity providing a location that focuses on self-care and tools to improve neuromuscular efficiency.
This is the missing piece to helping people understand what they’re doing with their plans and why.
I opened my first gym five years ago with the assistance of clients , friends and investors that have gained great success through my coaching programs. This has not been an easy process. Over these five years I’ve sacrificed my personal life and time to operate this startup on my own.
There’s a level of pride in this and allot of depending on myself to keep going even when doing multiple jobs that nobody notices.
I have to notice and stay vigilant. This is a job where members just leave and don’t say “goodbye” or “thank you”.
There’s an assumed equivalency between the payments made to the gym and the services available.
For the members that take advantage of the light coaching, their training plans are curated to achieve their goals. For members that treat Cat’s Club Fitness like they treat 24HR Fitness, they will come and go without an upgrade in education and results are mediocre at best.
Overcoming the challenges of trying to stand out in a saturated market continues. I have a list of successful happy members, I hope to have the marketing capital needed to compete for exposure soon. I will continue to put my all into each person that spends time at my gym.
I’m learning so much about the emotional attachments people have with not only food; but also with other habits that may not be in alignment with their goals. There’s also a tendency of the client to form an attachment to the coach. Some even push for a personal relationship, even though the purpose of the coach is to teach the basic elements of sport biomechanics and promote a continuance of education beyond the training sessions in the gym. The work done outside the gym will dictate results.
I know, this is some heavy stuff; but these are layers of complications I face going against the normal “personal training” route. Many of these layers have little to do with exercising. Unfortunately, marketing in my industry tries so hard to connect people’s emotions to fitness, while I’m enforcing emotional detachments with a focus on science and movement.
I’ve had such great success transforming lives with this method of coaching, so it fuels my push forward.
The purpose of this startup is to gain experience operating my gym and managing the coaching programs.
My goal is to recruit more coaches interested in true entrepreneurship. When a coach is ready to transition from employee to employer, I want to mentor them into creating a private location of their own to run their programs without distractions.
I want to connect with investors, real estate experts and more entrepreneurs that are willing to collaborate.
My personal story is long and full of trauma so I’ll save that for my memoirs. Suffice it to say, the average person would be dead by now traveling the path I’ve laid.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I honestly don’t feel confident answering this question. I don’t go out much. Can’t afford it. I invest my earnings back into my business. This is some of the down sides to taking that brave step into entrepreneurship. Some sacrifices are a small price to pay in comparison to the benefits of running a small business within my community. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others.
