We had the good fortune of connecting with Rodney McCullum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rodney, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Like every business owner, I found a gap in the market where my ideas could flourish, I saw a lot of gate keeping for some of the techniques and business practices for photographers who wanted to get into the fashion industry and shoot great clothing and talented models. So I want to be the one to fill that gap and create a way for anyone to follow their dreams regardless of the idea of ‘Luck’.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a photographer based in Los Angeles, I consider myself as a photographer who wants to change the game through self learning and community, Photography is about looking at the world in different ways. Its one of the few ways that allows another person to see the world through your eyes. I like that idea because I was always bad at expressing myself through words. The right combination of sentences always eluded me. Photography was my way through that. I overcame a lot of my challenges through a litany of trial and error, I learned through being hardheaded and going for goals that would otherwise be seen as unobtainable for photographers of my skill level. I figure that it doesn’t make sense to wait until you have name recognition and fame to try to start experimenting with new styles and techniques. By far the hardest thing that I’ve done is trying to create a business out of my passion, I find it hard to find cogent advice, and it always turns into vague gesturing. Extremely frustrating to say the least. That’s why I am in the process of creating a YouTube channel to make help other photographers like myself. The channel is called ‘Inliight Society’ and will be an experiment for myself, I want to shoot for Vogue magazine one day, this channel will be a POV of my journey from a wannabe to the real deal. I’ll show everything from point A to Point B. That way someone with legit questions can follow my path and learn from my wins and losses.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, as an introverted person, the best places are the ones with the least amount of people. quiet and secluded are my happy places. So first would be a tour of the couch and my upstairs office which I lovingly call ‘The Tree house’. My wife and I love the desert for that exact reason. Wide open spaces for my dog to run around and nothing but trees and plants to hear our conversations about aliens. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my beautiful hardworking wife, Jenalta. She is the reason that I’ve gotten as far as I have with my photography, she keeps me motivated and slays any procrastination that may be lurking around the corner, shes supported me and made sure that I stayed focused on my journey. She is the personification of everything that means love and I appreciate her for her patience and dedication to helping me grow as a man and a photographer.
