We had the good fortune of connecting with Romas Ušakovas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Romas, tell us about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work as a freelance cinematographer in Los Angeles primarily focusing on feature films, shorts and documentaries. I also do music videos, commercials and drone piloting.

I am very fortunate to have worked on three feature films as a cinematographer to this date. A documentary ‘LA QueenCiañera’ and two narrative fiction- ‘City of Love’ and ‘How to Make Her Cheat’. The two latter ones are still in post-production, expected to come out early next year.

LA QueenCiañera is a touching life story of Bamby Salcedo, a transgender activist, who was able to turn unfair life experiences into opportunities. Two Hollywood celebrities Patricia Arquette and Rosario Dawson gave their insights on the difficulties that trans people are going through. Our film screened in many film festivals around the world, receiving Best Documentary Feature at Kashish International Film Festival and other awards.

City of Love is a crime-drama about Spencer Combs, an ex-con who decides to work as a rideshare driver and help his passengers. Too bad that things take a crazy twist soon enough.

How to Make Her Cheat is a comedy featuring John Cleese, Eric Roberts, Megan Mckenna, and Steve Hodgetts. Weeks away from his wedding, an insecure guy puts his fiancée through a series of tests to see if she would cheat before they tie the knot.

Achieving these goals wasn’t easy, but everything is possible with everyday effort and hard work. If you believe in yourself, only the sky is the limit.

Is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I always put my best effort into work with great attention to detail. When prepping for a shoot I always like to do careful planning and research, coming up with creative and stylish visual solutions, but I am always open to improvisations on set.

I believe that the key to successful filmmaking is collaboration and communication. Sharing ideas and working in a team is the best way of achieving great results while having a great time on set.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank everyone who supported, helped and inspired me on my journey. Starting with my dear parents, family, friends and everyone who I worked with on various projects. Those are the people who made me who I am today and I am grateful to be surrounded with them.
