Meet Ron L. Wilson | Filmmaker & Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ron L. Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ron L., what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since I was a child, I have been laser-focused on exploring the art of storytelling and film was always my preferred medium. Going into the field was not just something I thought would be fun to do, it was something I felt I had to entirely dedicate myself to and it’s a decision I very rarely question.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey as a filmmaker has been far from linear. With how unpredictable and reactive the industry can be I find myself putting my eggs in several baskets, all under the umbrella of my company, Out of Grey Productions.
While I constantly have film projects in the works, my most current project is a series pilot under the tentative title, “Clear & Far.” Clear & Far is a sitcom about two spoiled stepsisters who turn to weed dealing after their rich parents financially cut them off. It’s received a lot of comparisons to “It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia.” While this pilot is still in the late post-production phase I find myself focusing on other ventures. Though I primarily produce/direct I also have a passion for camera work. On the side I work as a cinematographer and freelance videographer, making everything from a dramatically lit work of fiction to a wedding and live event look cinematic and picturesque.
The road to getting these things in a sustainable system has been far from easy and in many ways it’s still in the works. I owe much of my success to being super open to any opportunities coming my way and being friendly to any potential clients I may encounter. At the end of the day though, regardless of the challenges, I simply keep getting myself out there, pressing onward and I recommend the same to anyone with similar aspirations. I think it’s notable that my company’s name originates from the idea of adding color to something black and white, taking something basic and adding flair to that. If there’s one thing I’d like people to associate with me it’s that. It’s the idea that whether it’s a fictional work of cinema or a real-life videography event, whether it’s operating the camera or being behind it, I’m going to take what’s there and add style, personality, and flair to it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For starters, I wouldn’t be where I am today without some of my close friends and frequent collaborators. Jacob Weismer of Weismer Cinema is a cinematographer with whom I’ve worked throughout my time in college, most recently for an upcoming series I have in production. Jacob is one of the most talented individuals I know. There’s also William O’Keefe of Coffee Time Cinema. While I don’t collaborate with him as closely on my projects he is one of the most motivated people I’ve ever met and in his pursuit of film never wavers in the face of any adversity. Will is undoubtedly an inspiring person.
There are several others I have only just begun to work with that have helped push me forward too, namely, film producer Taso Zouroudis of Set to Go Studios, and Alex Gartelgruber, creator of the music project, Garjiro.
There are many more names I could throw out there of those who have helped and continue to help me. My parents have been supportive, as have my non-film friends. For the sake of brevity though, I’ll end my shoutouts by giving credit to all of the wonderful artists and filmmakers I met and worked with at New Jersey’s own Montclair State University, a college I graduated from in Spring of 2022. The contacts I made there have helped shape who I am as an artist and how I approach my work as a business in an invaluable way.
