We had the good fortune of connecting with Roni Cleveland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Roni, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Life isn’t happening to you; Life is responding to you”
I love this quote because it reminds me that I’m really in control and that I am the captain of my own ship. We often think things are happening to us and that we have no say. And sure, on the surface, that’s true. However, what’s more important is how we conduct ourselves before, during, and after these things happen—good or bad. If we can maintain a healthy sense of awareness, positivity and accountability, you will attract mostly favorable outcomes. I believe in God and the powers of the universe, they are in the same if you ask me. Phenomena such as manifestation, karma, and events that present as serendipitous, but to me, are no accident. You were just in alignment.
Life is what you make it and it will respond accordingly. I have this affirmation written on a mini white board in my kitchen. It’s a great daily reminder that the universe will bend and flex to my will as long as I have a positive outlook, move with good intention, and help others along the way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My husband and I own and operate a restaurant in South Los Angeles. John is the Executive Chef and I am the Maître D’. I am most proud of serving the South Central community specifically because I was born and raised here. It’s hard to describe the feeling knowing you are able to give back to a community that gave so much to you. I am also proud of our journey to overcome major obstacles just months before taking this business on. It was not easy. My husband John was involved in a tragic accident that left him on crutches and 2 months after that I went into preterm labor with our first child in 2017. He was born 1 pound 11.5 ounces and a list of complications. I am happy to report that he is a healthy and bright 3 year old today. We know a thing or two about resilience. And that is a key ingredient in running an essential business during a pandemic. We plan to stick around for as long as we possibly can, but we can only do that with LA’s help. Please find us and show your support. We are in this together. And together we will overcome.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, of course, the best place to go for brunch and dinner is Post & Beam restaurant. I was pleased to see many others highlight Post & Beam on this site. Very cool. Our restaurant is best known for its relaxed, soulful vibes and incredible food. Other favorites are: Simply Wholesome for all your health needs and nutritious shakes. Hotville Chicken, our neighbors in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. Things to do: Visit Kenneth Hahn Park for a great hike or family outing, once you leave the park be sure to head South on La Brea to see one of the best views of LA. Pick up a book from my favorite bookstore Malik Books located at the Westfield Culver City Mall (forever Fox Hills ;)) or the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall. But now that we are in the thick of COVID-19 restrictions; there’s no place like home. Stay safe everyone!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out my husband, John Cleveland. John is the award winning Executive Chef and Owner of Post & Beam restaurant in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. John is my biggest inspiration. His entrepreneurial spirit has rubbed off on me and because of him I am no longer afraid to step out on faith. I am less rigid and more confident in my abilities. He is the best husband and father to our son, Miles. I love you, John. Cheers to more life!
