We had the good fortune of connecting with Ronzi Lei and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ronzi, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting “The Toes Shop”, a business selling slippers with a pineapple bread shape, began with a unique blend of cultural inspiration and market opportunity. As a fan of whimsical and fun fashion, I realized there was a growing trend towards novelty and comfort in home footwear. Additionally, pineapple bread, with its distinctive look and cultural significance, seemed like the perfect motif to bring a touch of joy and uniqueness to everyday wear.

To validate my idea, I conducted market research focusing on trends in the home footwear industry. Surveys and social media polls indicated a strong interest in novelty slippers that were both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. I also analyzed competitors and found a gap in the market for culturally inspired, high-quality novelty slippers.

With this insight, I defined the vision for The Toes Shop: to create fun, comfortable, and culturally inspired slippers that bring a smile to our customers’ faces. Our mission was not just to sell slippers but to offer a delightful experience with every step.

Next, I developed a detailed business plan. This included identifying our target market—mainly millennials and Gen Z consumers who value unique, trendy, and comfortable products. Our unique selling proposition (USP) was the combination of cultural inspiration and comfort, offering a product that stood out both in design and quality. We planned our marketing strategies to leverage social media platforms, influencer partnerships, and engaging content to create buzz and drive sales.

Taking action involved several key steps. I secured initial funding through personal savings and a small business grant aimed at supporting innovative startups. I make a basic design then collaborated with manufacturers to create prototypes that perfectly captured the pineapple bread shape while ensuring comfort and durability. Building a talented team who shared my vision was crucial, and together, we refined our products and prepared for launch.

The launch of “The Toes Shop” was a significant milestone. We faced initial challenges, such as perfecting the manufacturing process and managing supply chain logistics. However, by staying adaptable and responsive to feedback, we were able to overcome these hurdles. We also learned the importance of engaging with our customers through social media and incorporating their feedback into product improvements.

“The Toes Shop” has garnered a loyal customer base and received positive reviews for our unique and comfortable slippers. This journey has been filled with learning and growth, but seeing the joy our products bring to our customers makes it all worthwhile. I will continue to explore the vision of combining cultural inspiration with everyday comfort, striving to build a brand that stands out in the market and brings a touch of fun to daily life.

What should our readers know about your business?
Trying to start a brand on your own is definitely not an easy task, but it’s not that hard either. Like Musk said, building a rocket may seem hard but you just parse it down into 27 different pieces one by one. I’ve been working and studying at a consulting firm that does offshore services while doing my own business in order to learn more about management, and I’ve realized that a successful business as defined by the secular world is never as simple as it seems. There are a lot of details in between, from supply chain, management, product segmentation, financial, etc. There are actually a lot of categories in there. But it’s not so difficult to break these details down into small parts and accomplish one part a day, it’s just important to do it. Think well to do, decided to do need to be decisive enough, and be prepared to bear the consequences and risks for their own choices.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Walk on the streets anywhere in Los Angeles, I meet a cool music producer while I was sitting on the park and had my lunch. I was working in make music and music performance as hobbits being a while. And the connection with him definitely gives me another chance to find my core passion. (I want to be a multi-media artist ILY!!!)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank very much my friends around me who support my brand and FIDM as a school, where I promoted my brand before I graduated getting supportive voices from my classmates and professors. As well as my friend Mimiko(ig @mimikomiko) who recommended me to participate in the interviews, and Ada who is a small business founder (ig @Nuzzle_pet) also helps a lot to find more marketing chance to my brand. They put on pineapple slippers and then patiently introduces them to people interested in the product every day. Including the fact that I moved to the Arts District of Los Angeles, where the neighborhood is very harmonious, and everyone is very supportive of my business. (Also shoutout to all my besties they create the best contents for my products!!! and always giving me practical ideas to help me make it better!!!)
