We had the good fortune of connecting with Roxana Baldovin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roxana, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take! I’m not a huge fan of sports but I am a huge fan of this quote. If I see someone I want to work with in public for example and i’m getting cold feet to approach them, i’ll say this to myself. If someone asks me if they should hit someone up, i’ll tell them this quote. You have nothing to lose by putting yourself out there – and if you don’t put yourself out there, you’ll never know what you could be missing out on! Shoot your shot – everytime. The worst that could happen is they don’t respond. But at least you tried!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Art is a business just like anything else. In order to be a professional creative, you have to have really thick skin and handle rejection well. To be an artist is to be a fighter – we are constantly fighting for our ideas to be made, for people to give us a chance, for our voices to be heard. We are in constant competition – not only with others, but with ourselves. I got to where I am today because I never stopped fighting. However, there comes a point where you have to take a step back and realize sometimes hanging up the armor and saying “no” works in your best interest, too. So I’m most excited about the original, narrative TV/Film content that i’ve been working on and having my voice be heard in a way that is true to me, not molded to fit an artist, label or brand agenda.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take them jetskiing to Catalina or rent a boat out in Marina del Rey. The laws here don’t require a boating license so my girls and I have taken boats out ourselves without a captain. For a cheaper vibe you can kayak with the seals, too. It’s LA’s best kept secret. Less than $30 for a private hang out with wild seals. To eat, we’d go to Sushi Fumi. You have to try the salmon lemon nigiri & miso black cod nigiri, too. Korean BBQ and karoake is also a quintessential LA time, and korean tapas at Dan Sang Sa. Joans on Third, Crossroads & Barney’s are great for a celebrity sighting. We’d definitely hit Barney’s for Trivia on tuesdays – my team and I are in the top 3 every week. My favorite bars are Davey Wayne’s, a speak-easy with live music and disco funk and Desert 5 Spot, where everyone is dressed to the 9’s in their cowboy boots and hats. I love a good theme. The Academy Museum is amazing as a cinephile, and the Broad or LACMA always has a great exhibit to check out. I also love going to the Comedy Store, it’s like my second home out here. The Griffith Observatory is beautiful at night. And i’d try to sneak in a day to do psychedelics at Disneyland 😀

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Lately, I have to thank Rebecca Niles and Artclass Content for signing me on as a commercial director with no prior experience directing commercials. Usually people are pigeon-holed into a specific market & it’s very hard to make the jump from one to another – so I’m grateful Rebecca saw my talent and eye and trusted that i’d be able to take all my years of experience in music videos into the commercial world. About a decade ago, I was studying broadcast journalism in college. I used to make my news pieces have really trippy edits and transitions and one day my professor Aaron Brown – a legend who’s first day on-air at CNN was 9/11 – told me that i’m too creative for journalism and to go out there and do what I really want to do. Not to be afraid because “the fear is the failure”.
