We had the good fortune of connecting with Roxanne Karpatvolgyi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Roxanne, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I think you just know deep down that- doesn’t matter how hard life gets – you just can’t give up. 2020 has been a tough year for all of us, and it has challenged every lives on the planet and every career. I have been fired early at this year, and so I had my hard time deciding whether I should give up my dream, and I try to find a job, any job as soon as possible. Or I do not give up, and I keep going to reach my dreams, because after all that’s what matters, to fill our lives with things that excites us and makes us happy on a daily basis. And everytime, I reached rock bottom, I just knew that if I give up I can not be happy, so I’ve decided that I will keep going till I’ll success. So my advice is that you shouldn’t give up. If there’s something that you’re really passionate about, keep going, educate yourself, find new people who have more experience in that thing you’re interested in, and go for it!
Please tell us more about your career. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
As a professional illustrator, I’m busy with creative jobs. I worked with several companies like Warner Bros, Netflix and Wacom, and I’ve been in many projects as an artist. Currently I’m a fulltime 2D Game Artist, and a freelancer Illustrator. In my case what’s helped me to overcome the challenges I had to face is, first I always do my best, and try to do better than that. I work 15 hours a day, and I’m very dedicated and always wanting to learn. – So one of the most important things to overcome challenges, is that we have to understand that we always have to be open to learn, learn from someone, from something, to get better and better every single day. To be modest, and kind. And to be deeply dedicated to your goals and dreams. – Another thing is to be realistic-optimistic. To see the world in the way it is, but also to be positive about things that comes our way. So whatever comes, even if it’s stressful, we have to see it as something we are going to successfully solve. – The next thing is to seek failure. Because it’s something we can not and we shouldn’t try to avoid. Will Smith once has said: “Fail early, fail often, fail forward. It’s always a little bit frustrating to me when people have a negative relationship with failure. Failure is a massive part of being able to be successful. You have to get comfortable with failure, you have to seek failure because failure is where all of the lessons are.” In my art, I have my own art, my own style and world, that makes me happy. That I share with my followers on instagram. And I have my work, where I try to be as versatile as possible, where I’m working in a team, on several projects. I have been working, on comics, storyboards, video clips, concept arts, magazine illustrations, game designs, covers, vector arts, animations, character designs…etc. Both makes me happy, and excites me every single day. I think I’m most proud of the level of my dedication. Because when I started to learn art specifically at the age of 14, I went to an art Highschool. And I wasn’t the best one. Actually I almost failed my drawing exams, and I have struggled a lot, because I wanted to be like those kids, who seems like they have a born talent, to draw anything. However now 13 years later, I see that only talent isn’t enough to succeed. We have to be brave, to jump to the unknown, to take risks. And yes we’re going to fail hundreds, thousands of times. But even though many people can not take these failures, you have to stand, and learn from it, and be better. Improve yourself, and you will get there!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think at any place in the world, the most exciting places to go, are those antique stores, coffee shops, small hidden parks, and art supply stores, which only local people know. If my best friend would visit, who may have never been in my city, first I’d ask them where they’d like to go to, and then I’d show them around the little treasures, those places where I go all the time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a lot of people I’d love to shout out, my colleagues, my mentors. Just too many people who I’m learning a lot everyday.
