We had the good fortune of connecting with Roya Adjory and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roya, how does your business help the community?
Back in 2005 when I established a green hair salon that became certified by the city of Los Angeles green business program and became the first hair salon to receive a climate leader award from
Cool California , a subsidiary of California Air Resources , I was asked by many people if my salon will turn clients hair Green .
we have come a longs ways since then and many businesses and organizations are well aware of our individual responsibilities when it comes to the climate.
There are huge amounts of toxins in the Hair industry that are dumped into the environment and have not been talked about . Thank goodness for committed organizations like EWG and such have made this fact visible to many concerned .
My salon with its high ethos definitely set a standard for what it means to be a Green mom and pop business . If we can do it , you can do it too . With many interviews and articles that was published around the time of opening of the hair salon , I made sure I was communicating important and life saving information to the salon owners , stylists and the public on the dangers of beauty products with ingredients never tested for safety or regulated by any governing body
20 years later , we continue to spread that kind of information that can be life saver for many with chemical sensitivities and also connected to a Danish company Natulique with the highest ethos to work with and to distribute their natural based and certified organic products in California .
These professional certified organic products are our way into hair salons and individuals who are chemically sensitive and aware and they become vehicles for change and to spread the information that are essential in living a healthier life , making choices that ultimately better for all of us , the outer and the inner environment.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We continue to have a mom and pop business ran by my husband and myself.
what sets us apart from others is the natural based and certified organic products we carry . Our message is clear and it is all about helping salons and individuals making choices with their personal care and hair color products that are cleaner safer and highly functional . To be successful with these products , they have to have high performance otherwise it is a waste of money and resources . As I said previously , these products get us into hair salons otherwise we would not and we are able to communicate important at times life saving information specially with individuals who are highly sensitive to slew of chemicals in traditional hair colors and personal care products and some have to give up their profession for that reason .
Having established a certified Green hair salon business has opened many doors including more business, connections that led to many more opportunities and one of those opportunities was meeting a Danish company with great clean products to use at our salon but also be able to become their California distributor for their unique and clean products .
After 30 years of being behind a salon chair , I was able to retire from it but continue to do my advocacy work being a distributor of these amazing products
Nothing is easy that is worth doing so with consistency and persistence anything can be done .
Nowadays I am able to do my business along with my husband who has taken an interest in it as well so I can continue with my second passion my art .

I continue to grow in both these areas and I am grateful to be able to do both .
I want the world to know we all make a difference by becoming aware of our environment and its challenges . By becoming mindful of choices we make , the shift slowly starts to happen but it will take most of us engaged and hopeful for a future for our children and their children that is kinder and more connected to the whole .

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live and work in Topanga which is a large park land with about 10,000 living up here . I think this is one of my favorite places to visit , hike , eat , shop and be lucky enough to live .
My second favorite place is Pasadena and the museum of Norton Simon . The city is a historic landmark with great stately architecture and shops .

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say my husband steven sherman has been a major supporter of my efforts to establish a green business .
Los Angeles Green Business program has certified many and continues to encourage businesses to make changes that is good for everyone .
Cool California with their awards program has encouraged and cheered many who stepped up their commitment to the environment by awarding them and recognizing their efforts .
Women’s voices For The Earth is a non profit organization along with Breast cancer Prevention Partners and Black Women’s For Wellness and few others that have been instrumental in changing outdated cosmetics laws so the public and salon workers are protected from toxins lurking in our everyday products .
As you know without these laws anything goes . We have a long ways to go to clean up our act with these chemicals but it is a good start and we continue to fight with massive organizations that have no interest in making changes . This is where the consumer buying power comes into play and making smart choices sends a clear message we are not interested in their cancer causing products .
I also want to acknowledge Natulique , a brand from Denmark that has created salon products using cleaner and greener ingredients . I salute to them and many others who have made the commitment to our future generation and to our one and only home planet 🌎
