We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruijia Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruijia, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I am a film and commercial producer. When people think of being a producer, they are thinking about lights, camera, Hollywood, stars and power. However, one thing that they don’t realize behind all that there is a lot of hard work, sweat and tears that went into this job. Being a producer means that you are in control of the entire project, whether it’s good or bad, It is all up to you. A producer needs to be a good team leader and sometime a great listener. As a producer in Hollywood, you’re dealing with a lot of personalities, egos and politics. Even though sometime you want to be creative but the reality is that everyone turns to the producer to solve their problem but when a producer has a problem. He or she can only turns to him or herself to fix it. So it requires a lot of patience and a great deal of creative thinking.
It is a stressful job. Sometime you have other people to answer to, either a studio or a client. You have to go out of the way to satisfy their demand while in the meantime, staying true to your original vision.
It is not an easy job but when the project is finished and you look back at it, seeing how everything has came together, you would realize that everything was worth it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe that by being a producer that has knowledge of both cultures, (China and the US) I am in a unique position to truly connect the two cultures. I began my producing career when I was just a teenager, following my father’s footstep. He taught me the art of producing, which usually people think that it is a job that require more business skills rather than creative skills. However, I think a good producer is a great artist. An artist that excel in the art of management. Managing people is definitely an art because everyone is different and to be the person that everyone can rely on and listens to require an art. When you interact with different people, you need have different styles.
Beside the management skills, a producer is the person that control the total tone of the film and he or she needs to be able to put the right artists together and make sure that they create something fantastic.
I am a producer that wants to tell the world my voice and how I perceive this world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
