We had the good fortune of connecting with Rula A. Muñoz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rula, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Many people often don’t realize all the effort that goes into creating a play or musical. Usually, they only see the final result, but a lot of work happens before and during the production process. Teamwork is crucial in theater, as it takes time and collective effort to bring stories to life on stage.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel like I was born to tell stories. Since I can remember, I have had a hunger to share stories with others. I believe my current position is a result of divine guidance and support from my ancestors, colleagues, friends, blood family, and chosen family. I am also very persistent and like to achieve my goals. I do everything I can to pursue my passions. My career has had its ups and downs, which, at times, may have felt challenging, but overall, I understand that everything happens for a reason. I wouldn’t be here, strong and resilient, if it weren’t for the lessons I’ve learned throughout my life. I always knew I wanted to become an artist, even though I didn’t know the specific path. I followed my intuition and trusted the process. Along the way, I’ve learned many lessons, one of which is to be prepared and stay prepared for opportunities. We never know when a big breakthrough will occur, so it’s important to be ready to seize it. As a multi-talented theater artist, I aim to share stories I care about from any angle possible. I’m interested in creating or reimagining stories that challenge theater in terms of content and form. As a pop culture enthusiast and history buff, I’m passionate about unveiling queer history and bringing forgotten or erased figures to the forefront.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am incredibly grateful to have received encouragement and support from various individuals and organizations throughout my career. As I reflect on this, the first name that comes to mind is National Queer Theater. Since 2020, I’ve had the privilege of being involved in their programs, and it’s truly an honor to consider it one of my artistic homes. Additionally, I want to acknowledge the Latinx Theatre Commons, which, while not an organization but a movement, has provided me with a sense of connection to my community as an immigrant. I’ve found wonderful friends and collaborators through their programs, and I am immensely thankful for the opportunities they have given me.
