We had the good fortune of connecting with Rupert Outman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rupert, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is essential. It’s how we learn and grow as humans. It can be scary, and it doesn’t always pay off, but you’ll never know if you don’t try. When I was designing children’s museum exhibits we had the challenge of creating a health care themed exhibit. I took the risk of stocking the tiny cupboards with real medical supplies (if you’ve ever been tempted to peek in the cabinets of an exam room while you waited, this exhibit is for you) It paid off, hundreds of narratives were born and the exhibit could continually become something new. Soap making might not seem very risky but it can be scary to bet on yourself. If we choose not to take these slightly scarier turns in life we are denying ourselves the thrill of adventure and explorative growth, but most importantly, the wisdom of failure.

What should our readers know about your business?
Sup Soap Co. was born of a love for suds and a disgust for plastic. SUP= Stop Using Plastic. Our mission is replace every plastic body-wash bottle with one of our beautiful bars. The biggest challenge we face is to source quality ingredients that do not arrive in plastic packaging. We are extremely thankful for suppliers who already strive to offer plastic-free options. Although we do believe that the plastics industry has falsely made the public believe that it is OUR responsibility to take care of THEIR plastic products, and continue to make our choices limited, we are proud to offer another way to reduce plastic consumption.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I moved to LA only a few short months before Covid-19 hit so most of my exploring has been outdoors. One of the best things about LA is that you get both the mountains and the ocean. A hike into the Angeles National Forest and some tacos after sound like a pretty good day. The swap meets, flea markets, and trading posts are some of the most interestingly curated ones I’ve seen, those make for a fun weekend. And of course, a trip or two to the ocean. As soon as all the galleries reopen they’re sure to be on my list!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
You are nothing without your people right?

Without the love, support, and unconditional confidence my partner gives to me daily I would never have the courage to pursue this venture. I would like to thank all the beautiful women in my life, Kathy, Anastasha, Liz, Sarah, Maria, Melissa, Christina, Tylisha, Audrie, and Maia, who display unwavering strength in the most graceful ways, and who have taught me that uplifting others can only make you stronger. I was overwhelmed by the warm reception of fellow soap makers who freely share tips and techniques. I am grateful for places like Wild Terra who are striving to supply quality ingredients without plastic.
