We had the good fortune of connecting with Ry Toast and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ry, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Total Authenticity. And feeling present in the moment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a DJ and Yoga Teacher. I believe they are very similar roles. What sets me apart from other DJs and yoga teachers is not what I do, but how I do it. My overall look and sound, production catalogue, dedication to studying both pursuits (dojo mentality), my turntabilism, they way I fuse music and yoga, fashion, way of doing business, artivism, the way I carry myself, to name a few. I have an awesome weekly mix show “Mixtape Mondays” 8-9:30pm on twitch.tv/honeydewla that I am super pumped about. This is my outlet to play all the weird sh*t i love to listen to, scratch, breathe, stretch, rap, whatever. It’s perfect to put on while you make art/love/food with other weirdos! I am very proud of my next personal project: The Yoga Mixtape. It’s a yoga class on a mixtape with a video! So you can watch the postures as I guide you through them, all the while moving perfectly in sync to the music! I am always excited about my band Tyrone’s Jacket. My bandmates are my amazing husband The Grateful Carl (vocals/guitar/production) KnowaKing (vocals) and King David (producer). We have a new song 9/4/20 called “Streets” – A love song to the streets of LA with a video that calls attention to the homelessness crisis. Our debut album is dropping 11/4! How did I get here… I stuck to the things/people/pursuits that made me HAPPY and ditched the rest. I went too far in every direction and then I found balance. I took time out from the grind to focus on my and get whole with myself and everything in my business followed suit. I got help when I felt like I was struggling. If you know that you are not good at something- from marketing yourself to scratching records to feeling your feelings- don’t be afraid to get help! My name is Ry Toast and I build empowerment, inspiration, equality and a little bit of unicorn sparkle into everything I touch.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Malibu for sure. Joshua Tree. Runyon. Dinner at Crossroads. Brunch at Sage. Dancing wherever the best DJ is playing. Yoga class with Mary Beth La Rue. Blind Barber for Cocktails. The Misfit. Grand Park anything. Nic’s. Concert at the Roxy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my band Tyrone’s Jacket. My bandmates inspire me everyday in every way!
