Meet Sadie Katz | Actress, Writer, Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sadie Katz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sadie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
People don’t normally associate opening a business with pursuing acting. However, when you decide to pursue acting as a profession, you are opening a small business: you, the actor. I’ve always been an actor. I think on a level, it’s who you are, but pursuing it outside of being just a hobby requires a different kind of commitment. Like opening a small business, you have to study the market, invest in the business (headshots, acting websites, publicity, workshops, audition equipment, audition wardrobe, etc) small businesses often take years before they’re actually profitable. Acting can be the same way. It’s a big part of paying your dues, but it’s also finding a market that’s interested in buying what you’re offering. I spent the better part of ten years figuring out my “brand” and honing my materials (reel, resume) to fit that brand. For my first lead feature film, I paid a publicist to promote and started to work on my “Google.” It was important to me, just as a small business, to make a distinct name for myself that could be sellable even in a smaller niche or market.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After nearly two decades as an actress, I’ve been fortunate enough to be in almost 100 productions, in independent film, studio films, documentaries, genre films, commericials, music video and more. I’ve had a lot of positive experiences and some not so positive. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that things don’t always go the way you imagined and your obligation is to put your best foot forward and keep going.
If you decided to be a tire salesman no one would expect you to be the top tire salesman in the world in order to claim you’re a tire salesman. Acting is a funny thing because often people think that if they’re not an Oscar winner or series regular, they haven’t “made it.” Sometimes expectations can stand in the way of your happiness in pursuing your dream career.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Atwater Village and I love it here! I’m super lucky to live in such a walkable area so I think I’d start their visit here. I’d start with some brisket breakfast tacos from Homestate and an iced cookie coffee. I’m not a sweet coffee person but Homestate runs their coffee over cookie grounds and it’s ammmazing. Okay, after the caffeine buzz we’d hit up the boutiques and vintage shops along Glendale Blvd. After a full day of shopping we’d grab happy hour at Bon Viviant and end the day at Club Tee Hee for live entertainment. The next day I’d book a table at Paradise Cove in Malibu for a day at the beach and lunch.
You can’t visit Los Angeles without taking in the celeb haunts. I’d get a little cheesy and book a celebrity bus home tour and lunch at Chateau Marmont. LA isn’t always an evening town these days, but no one does lunch like Los Angeles! For evening plans for the rest of the week, I’d book an evening at the Magic Castle, drinks at The Roosevelt, and snag theatre tickets at The Roosevelt. As a toddler mom, I love a visit to The Natural History Museum and lunch in China town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would say my biggest shout-out is my older son, Griffin Katz. Acting is a tough business with a lot of highs and lows having family that believes in you and has positive feelings towards your pursuit is so important. Griffin even as a young boy read lines with me, came with me to rehearsals and auditions, he watched me cry tears of joy and tears of sadness. There’s a certain dog-eared determination that you have to have when your pursuing something from scratch having someone who understood that was and still is a gift.
