Meet Saheer | Artist & Music Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Saheer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Saheer, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson I have learned in business is to make mistakes fast and make them big. It may feel off at first look but to attain mastery over anything, we have to dedicate time to excavating all the vain instincts in order to realize that it was never our perspective on its own that created something worth selling, let alone worth buying. The process of trial and error encourages learning and unlearning through real life experiences and tamps down the ego just enough to encourage evolution as you continue to execute. I’m in the business of song-making, whether it’s composing or post-production, so I don’t get caught up trying to be perfect when I’m pursuing something great.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music is a unique blend of Indian influence intertwined with my American upbringing. I have been recording music since 2003 so it’s difficult to accurately represent the breadth of my journey so far. From 2003-2005, I was strictly a hobbyist barely figuring out how to export songs in Sony Acid 1.0 to burn onto CDs. From 2005-2008, I figured out how to consistently produce songs with my cousins in San Jose. It made for a very fun 4 years of high school. In 2008 I went to UCR for my undergrad where I was introduced to new musical talents amongst my peers which elevated my game. It’s hard to put into words exactly how much passion, enjoyment, hard work, communication, and collaboration went into exercising my creativity. I not only regularly performed with a DJ and singers, but I captained a competitive dance team where my mix played a key role in getting our team their first 1st place trophy. I’m incredibly proud of the time I spent pursuing my craft there as it made me a multi-faceted creative and producer. I moved back home to the Bay Area where I attended an audio engineering program at SAE/Expression in Emeryville. This is where I learned how to be comfortable in large-format studio sessions and I met folks truly serious about their pursuits like myself, and it pushed me into my next phase of music production. Every song/mixtape/album thereafter displayed a change in my perception of sound and has showcased all my years of learning. I have commissioned my work to a wide range of artists, bands, labels and companies in various fields. Each experience has continued to pushed my abilities and shown me that I’m still capable of impressing myself 20+ years into being an artist. My story is one of self-determination and evolution despite challenges both internal and external and my music is an expression and representation of remaining inspired no matter what.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them around to all the major areas in the LA/OC area. Santa Monica, Hollywood, DTLA, Universal Studios, down around to Long Beach to Newport to Carslbad/SD. There would be a lot of driving but I’ve eaten at some amazing places all around the SoCal area. Toast in Brea, Lucifer’s in Mid-City Wilshire, India Restaurant in Artesia, Sandwich House in Cypress, Fresh Bagel Cafe in Buena Park and so many more. People wise I’d call up friends in respective areas to enjoy our time with.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family, past and present. They have been amazingly understanding of my passion and vision while dealing with the ups and downs in their own lives. My wife is my biggest supporter and without her backing, I would have made a hard exit many years ago. She offers insights that don’t exist in my normal day to day and when producing, it’s invaluable. I’m always thankful to my parents for practicing restraint (to a certain degree) dealing with a teenager taking to rapping and making beats. It must have been incredibly difficult to see me spend so much time making songs early on and not knowing how this would benefit me in the long run. Special shoutout to my cousins, especially the one from Ahmedabad who taught me how to play the keyboard and those who I grew up with in Fremont/San Jose who introduced me to hip hop.
