We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Holik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, what matters most to you?
Artistic integrity. It’s all one has. I’ve always thought that if I couldn’t make my music and art successful monetarily, I would spend everything I have to keep making it the way I want anyway. I would never compromise the vision of my band Perfect’s music, because that would be akin to character assassination to me!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets my band’s music apart from any other, is the complete devotion to crafting the best music possible. When writing music, I try to step outside myself and see if what I have done is pure beauty and expression, or if I have maybe compromised the music in the name of convenience or compromise. Stylistically, I don’t think there is a band in the United States that is quite like ours! We care about progressive music, and in a very literal way. There is not fixation with old aesthetics that we enjoyed about progressive rock, we just want to explore new ground. We want to push the medium further.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to every “the exchange” in Ohio to pour over CDs that could be buried gems. I would take them to the basements where we compose our music, and ideally partake in making some music!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout-out the band Koenjihyakkei for introducing me to a world of music beyond what I saw in my state and in my country!
