We had the good fortune of connecting with Fernanda Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fernanda, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
“El que no arriesga no gana” is a saying in spanish that means “the one who doesn’t risk doesn’t win”. I am a true believer that in life, we must dare, risk and explore. We must trust our instincts when reason says “don’t do it” . We must be willing to loose in order to gain. But in reality, there is really no loosing, because as we all know, we gain experience!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
NYTAQ stands for Not Your Typical Average Queen. We are a brand created by a Latina for all women. The home of the Con Ovarios. gear, because as women we do everything with our unique force…. Our life force! Our ovaries! NYTAQ is a platform for women artists to create one-of-a-kind vegan leather and denim hand-painted jackets.
After being laid off from work, I decided to use my voice, combining my two passions: acting and activism to create a lifestyle brand that would represent women around the world.
Being a business owner has not been an easy road, but it has definitely been a great teacher. Through NYTAQ I have learned the value of patience, perseverance, creativity, and unity.
NYTAQ is barely getting started!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To begin with, we would definitely take a drive on the PCH to Pirates Cove beach in Malibu, a hike on Los Liones Trail then visit the Self Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine on Pacific Palisades.
We would have some lunch at The Ivy in Santa Monica and dinner at Avra in Beverly Hills.
On Sunday we would visit the Broad museum, LACMA, and then take a walk in the Hollywood Blvd (they have to see the sign too of course)! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my inspiration, core support, and true love have been my family. Without them, nothing that I have accomplished would be possible.
Then, it’s my 16-year Buddhist practice of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo with the SGI.
Of course, all the books, too many to name, but The Pilgrimage by Paulo Coelho, Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain, and The Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes are 3 of them.
And lastly, my closest friends. You know who you are.
