We had the good fortune of connecting with Samantha Red and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Samantha, how do you think about risk?
If there’s anything I’ve learned especially in this industry, it’s taking risks no matter how daunting they may seem. I took a huge risk moving from Texas to LA leaving my family behind and everything I’ve ever known to pursue my dream of becoming an artist. It felt very lonely and scary at first and I constantly questioned whether I had made the right decision. Despite the feelings of uncertainty, I pushed through. Today, almost 2 years later, I’ve met incredible artists, and producers, and have even gotten to play at some amazing venues like The Mint LA and The Hotel Cafe. Even though all of this continues to be completely out of my comfort zone and there are constant feelings of anxiety and fear bubbling up, it has never once felt wrong in my gut. I think listening to your body is so important when deciding to take a big risk. Something may feel off or unusual, and I can happily say it has never felt that way since being here. Making that decision led me to discover my strengths and levels of perseverance I never thought I had, and it allowed me to meet talented individuals who have pushed me and helped me grow as an artist.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My whole family can sing, my father is an excellent accordion & trumpet player, and my late grandfather loved to sing all the classic Mariachi songs. This led to the beginning of my songwriting journey early on in my life at 8 years old. Songwriting has always been an escape for me, a therapeutic way to let out whatever I may have been going through. In doing that, I felt less alone. It was my own way of processing my pain, insecurities, and heartache. I write about mental health, death, love, heartbreak, and many other issues we struggle with on the daily. Truly, all I want is for people to connect to my songs in a way that helps them heal and makes them feel seen.

What I am most proud of is where I’m from: Brownsville, Texas. It’s a small city in South Texas that has a rich Mexican American culture with the kindest people and the most amazing food. Growing up in a predominantly Hispanic community has definitely influenced and shaped the artist I am today. Listening to all Spanish genres like Tejano, Ranchera, Mariachi, and more taught me the importance of storytelling in music and how that forms an even deeper, more relatable connection with the listener.

Although I am a smaller artist and still growing and learning every day, something I’ve learned along the way is the importance of authenticity. Being your true self, as cheesy as it may sound, is what will ultimately make you stand out. And while it may feel like no one is paying attention, somebody always is.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
What I love about LA is that there is ALWAYS something to do! For mornings, I would take my bff hiking, because that is a must in LA, considering the lovely weather and beautiful nature. I would take them either to Encino Falls in Malibu or Wilacre Park near Studio City. After the hike, I would take them to brunch (of course). The food is literally great everywhere, but I would go to Millie’s Cafe on Sunset. Then do some shopping at The Grove, and try some different desserts at the Farmer’s Market. At some point during the trip, I would plan a beach day, more than likely Point Dume in Malibu. As for nightlife, I’ve really been enjoying the bars in Silverlake, so would definitely take them there! On Sunday, take them to the Melrose Trading Post for some more shopping, tasty food, and great live music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all, I’m so grateful for my family & boyfriend who continue to encourage and support me from 1300 miles away. There have been several times where I doubt/second guess myself, and they’re right there to pick me back up. Second of all, I want to thank all my artist friends I’ve made in LA. Just to name a few, Sloane Skylar, Darien Bernard, Mika Krstic, and so many more. Their work ethic, optimistic attitude, and passion for music are infectious and inspiring. And a huge shoutout to my wonderful friends who continuously show up. As a baby artist, it’s a bit difficult ensuring people will attend your shows, but my friends are always there to support me no matter what!
