We had the good fortune of connecting with Sami Jo Justus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sami Jo, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Our thought process behind starting Babes N Butta was simply, “nothing tried, nothing done.” During the pandemic, we had time to re-evaluate our lives and really think about what was working for our family and what was not. One thing was for sure is that Britton and I recognized that for the last 6 years we have been working extremely hard and long hours. That was definitely not working for our family. We needed a change and an income that could be generated from home.
A friend of ours told us about making shae butter and told us she was sure it was something I would like. I was still on the fence because after all, we are serial entrepreneurs and did not want to pick up just another “thing” that did not have the longevity we were looking for.
After making several batches together we both started to really enjoy the process. This was the first venture that we saw eye to eye. It was the first venture that carried no friction for us and really enhanced our teamwork.
Babes N Butta started to have meaning. We first started selling batches to friends and family. Then we branched out to coworkers and church family. It was working and the product and customer service were definitely responsible for that.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We believe that everyone, no matter the societal standard, deserves to feel beautiful and comfortable in their own skin. That self care is about showing up as our authentic selves and attracting all that aligns with us as we move through the world with integrity and empathy.
We believe that our journey makes us unique. How did we end up here? This time it was intentional! We chose this! The joy we experienced when we made this leap convinced us that this is the road we’re supposed to be on.
Our goal is to be a product that reminds all our Butta Babes that they are whole in the skin they are in. Our goal is to let others know that their value starts with them. Our Buttas are handmade with natural ingredients and time. Someone created this product for them personally, to care for themselves in a way that creates comfort and enhances their skin (beauty). This is both the mission and what sets us apart.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We currently live around Atlanta. If our friends visited we would take them to a local mexican restaurant called El Indio to eat. They serve authentic Birria Tacos and the food is decently priced. We would take them to the trails in nature such as Amicalola Falls State Park or Chattahoochee Bamboo Forest for a day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our dear friend Ana Francais deserves a big shout out. She was the one who encouraged me to try making my own body butter and she was very supportive when we were unsure.
It’s funny, because we were just telling her we needed a change and she immediately responded with, “I think you should try this and I know you enough to know you will enjoy it.” She did not skip a beat to share information and she also has her own body butter line. (IG- Widthlovellc)
In an age where “friends” are competing with each other she chose to uplift us instead.
