We had the good fortune of connecting with Sammy Ryan Krasnow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sammy Ryan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Art in all its forms has always been immensely impactful. I have trouble speaking about emotion, whether it be someone’s or my own. Art allows me to convey a message or a feeling that I wouldn’t be able to otherwise. Art has impacted me to pursue it for the long haul. It keeps me focused and, frankly, out of trouble.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
If I am listening to music, watching a movie or reading, I like to find something I like about it rather than pick apart what I don’t. I feel that has always had an influence on how I approach anything I am working on.
This year has been challenging, but I used those challenges as opportunities to create. I released my first five song EP., called Genius and Magic and a song with my buddy Wynde Up ft. Dani King called “Alone.” That song was a long time in the making, and I’m super excited that it’s out. Thank you to our friends over at Monsoon Season for releasing that song and my EP. I have been lucky to have performed at memorable events and met some fantastic people.
I am working on new music that is much different from anything I have made before, and I am excited to show this side. At the risk of sounding cliche, I try hard not to pigeonhole myself. My projects and endeavors are constantly changing and growing. Keep them guessing, or whatever…
Pursuing a life of art is something you have to enjoy because it’s not easy. There is no guarantee it will pay the bills. But if you pursue it because you love it, then there isn’t anything more fulfilling.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles wouldn’t be a proper trip without a hike and tacos. My buddy Thomas showed me this really cool spot at Point Mugu overlooking the ocean that was really enjoyable. Afterwards, we’d have to get some tacos. In my opinion, tacos are good everywhere in LA. I have never had a bad one yet. Seemingly, the smaller the location, the better the taco. Taking a bike ride around Venice Beach would be another on my to do list. There is good food and always something to see. We’d have to take a trip to Amoeba Records, pick up some records, and take in everything Hollywood has to offer… haha. I’m one of those theme park nerds, so I’d have to go to Magic Mountain, Disneyland or Universal Studios. I have only been to a few, but I would love to check out more speakeasies and tiki bars in Hollywood and Downtown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to start with a shout to my man, Degen. At age 12, it was because of him that I learned to play the drums and bass. We also pushed each other to find new bands and he was always 2 steps ahead of everything. He later got into music and video production and showed me the ropes. I really can’t thank him enough for everything he’s helped me with. Major love to my guy Fayton. He helped boost my confidence to pursue becoming a solo artist/DJ. I had been in bands most of my life, mostly behind drums. It was a bit scary at first to be the only person on the stage, so thank you, Fayton. Much love to my guy Wynde-Up for making music with me and always giving me a second pair of ears on a beat I’m making. I’d like to send some love to Marvin of Mayhem Events. I have met so many amazing producers and DJs that have helped me navigate this scene and it wouldn’t have happened without Marvin’s events. Love to all my past bandmates and folks who’ve collaborated with me on a project. It’s important to recognize that I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. And thanks to my parents for letting me bang on my drums from morning till night. That must have been so painful…
