We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Wakeen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
The value or principle that matters most to me is one from the late Bishop Miquail M. Broadous Sr. He says to start where you are, use what you got, and do what you can. The reason why this principle matters to me is because a lot of time the thing that stops us from reaching our full potential is the feeling of not having enough. When you start where you are, you accept that just because you start here, doesn’t mean you will end there. When you use what you got, you find the unique aspects of of you are just based off of what you have access too. Last but not least you do what you can because that’s the motivation and the activation required and needed to keep everything moving forward to the ultimate end goal.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art expands in many directions, as an artist I started studying in musical theatre at the age of 15. Some will say I got a late start, I’d like to think that I was right on time. Musical Theatre was the entry way to everything else. Once I realized that if I dedicated enough time to all these crafts I can really make something of myself. Once I started recording music back in 2017, that’s when I would say I started to learn my true power as an artist. The thing that sets me apart from others is my willingness to be true, open and vulnerable in every aspect. It’s more about the impact than the influence, that’s how I will say I got here professionally. That’s why I love performing live because I’m able to feel and connect with my people. This journey has definitely not been easy but it sure has been worth it. A lot of times we say we want things, and then when we get those things we don’t know how to handle them. Being on this journey both personally and professionally has pushed me to go within and search for the strength and drive to continue making the right steps to achieve the goal. A lesson I have learned along this way is that if you quit on your dreams, somebody else will pick up where you left off. That’s why the brand is Always Working because the Hussle doesn’t stop even when the emotions don’t match.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was coming into town for a week and I had to show them the best time ever I would first get an airbnb in Ladera Heights with a nice pool and good vibes. I would reach out to my brother who is a chef to make sure all our meals were made with love and flavor. Monday would be a tourist day where we will ride through the city and check out all the landmarks that are really hidden gems. Tuesday we would hit Champs City bar for taco Tuesday. That in itself will be a highlight because if you’ve never been to Champs on Tuesday you are missing out. Wednesday would be the creative day/studio run, we will go from the dance studio, to the recording studio to the photoshoot. A whole day of content creating and living our best life. What’s a trip without a night out on the town. Thursday will be dedicated to brunch at the house with some close friends, then in the evening we will hit downtown to have a couple drinks before going to Jerry’s deli to refuel our bodies. Friday we will go to Dockweiler Beach and have a bonfire. You can’t come to California and not go to the beach, it’s like a cardinal sin.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The first shoutout I want to give is to God. With him I am everything and without him I am nothing. I would like to shoutout Amazing Grace Conservatory, thank you for creating a space where artists can be free to express themselves and understanding the power of our voices. Special shoutout to the entire Always Working Ent. village, thank you for always rocking with me and supporting the mission of shifting the culture of the entire entertainment industry. Thank you to my family and friends those I’m connected to and those I met along this journey, thanks for always being honest and true. Last but not least I want to give a super shoutout to every fan, dj, producer, executive for downloading and streaming the music catalog and purchasing a piece of merchandise. It is greatly appreciated, Let’s keep getting better.
