We had the good fortune of connecting with Samuela John and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Samuela, what makes you happy? Why?
What makes me happiest is waking up every morning with a purpose, a reason. Honestly, I’ve been going through a lot lately, and I’ve been trying to redefine what happiness even looks like for me these days. But one constant for me has always been music. It has always been an outlet for me during low times, and I always turn to it for salvation and refuge. My music is something I hold incredibly close to my heart, maybe even too close. I think I am happiest when I am in my room, on my bed, playing one of my songs without a care about who can hear or see me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a guitarist and singer/songwriter based in the vibrant heart of New York City. Over the past two years, I’ve immersed myself in the local NYC artist community, where I’ve not only performed but also fostered invaluable connections and collaborations that have reshaped the landscape for emerging talents like myself.

In the past three years, I’ve been honing my craft and refining my sound, ultimately crafting an alternative R&B and indie folk fusion that embodies softness and gentleness. My music is a reflection of my desire to heal and inspire peace in others.

What sets me apart is my honest and relatable songwriting, coupled with the somber yet sweet melodies of my guitar. I have a knack for infusing a bittersweet twist into happy tunes and a ray of light into melancholic melodies. My unique blend of R&B vocals over indie guitar melodies distinguishes me from others in the indie genre. Additionally, as a dark-skinned Black woman, I bring a much-needed and underrepresented perspective to the indie music space.

Getting to where I am today hasn’t been easy. The journey has been filled with challenges, from finding my unique voice to navigating the complexities of the music industry. I’ve faced moments of self-doubt and uncertainty, but each challenge has taught me resilience and perseverance. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to stay true to myself and my art, no matter how difficult the path may seem.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that my music is more than just songs; it’s a vessel for healing and connection. I aim to create a space where people can find solace and inspiration through my melodies and lyrics. My story is one of overcoming obstacles and finding strength in vulnerability, and I hope to inspire others to embrace their authentic selves through my music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friends were visiting New York City, I’d want to give them an unforgettable experience. We’d start the day with breakfast at Russ & Daughters, savoring their iconic bagel and lox. Then we’d head to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island for a dose of history and breathtaking views. Afterward, we’d take a stroll through Central Park, possibly renting a rowboat on the lake. For lunch, we’d grab a slice at Joe’s Pizza in Greenwich Village. In the evening, we’d enjoy some good music at the Blue Note wrapping up the night with drinks at a local speakeasy. This blend of iconic landmarks, delicious food, and vibrant nightlife would perfectly encapsulate the magic of NYC.
