We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandra Barranco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sandra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always wanted to have complete control of my time. When I was an employee, I struggled with the concept of having to ask permission as an adult to take time off etc. It was important to me to create a career that allowed me to be able to maintain a proper balance between being a mother, wife and studio owner. After these 11 plus years, I am so glad to say I have made the right choices to reach my goal. Nothing is more rewarding.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own Fusion Studios. It is a dance studio with a location in Torrance and Rolling Hills. Fusion prides itself on having quality instructors from all over Los Angeles to train young dancers in the South Bay. We know that it’s so important for our youth to have a safe space for them to express themselves. The arts are so valuable and dance teaches children so many important tools that they can use as an adult. I am so excited to now have two locations where we can touch more young lives. I can honestly say that I am where I am through trial and error. When something doesn’t work, you change it. I am never embarrassed to say that something needs to be adjusted, edited or deleted for the following season. I accept ideas from
my staff and try to remain open minded. As I look back I can remember my first 5 years of business.. I did a lot of the work on my own. It has only been the past 5 years where I realized there are other people who can do it better than me. I should let them do it! Haha.
When I was growing up I always wanted to be in entertainment. I never had the proper guidance to do it professionally so I went to school to become a high school teacher. I hated it. I stumbled on the opportunity to teach dance and found so much joy. Luckily the opportunity came for me to buy the studio I was teaching at. That’s when my dreams started coming true. Being able to watch these dancers train from a young age all the way to high school is the most rewarding. Now both of my daughters are dancing and I am a dance mom myself. It’s a wild ride being on this end of the stage.
I’m so blessed to have the students choose us for their dance training. The teachers are dedicated, passionate and insanely talented.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a member at Soho Warehouse in downtown. We would spend the day at the pool there and eat lunch. I would probably take her to the Broad museum for a stroll then we would head back to Bestia for dinner. They have the most amazing squid ink pasta.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For every successful business, you need a fantastic team. It took me years to find the right people who loved Fusion Studios as much as I do. Natalie, my manager, who many times had to tell me what would and wouldn’t work. Chelsea, my studio director, who jumped with both feet and took responsibility over entire dance company. Not an easy task and so glad to let her do it. My newest ally and assistant director, Mady, who is reshaping my second location. Caitlin and Michelle are the most amazing and reliable office staff. So lucky to have them on our team. My dance teachers and amazinf choreographers always go above and beyond for their students. They are why dancers come and stay for years. Last and most dear to my heart I give so much appreciation to my husband, Augusto. He has always been the most supportive in this journey. He also comes to the rescue when things need to be fixed around the studio. I am so grateful to have him.
