We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandra Espinet and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sandra, how do you think about risk?
Generally speaking, life is about taking risks. We take a chance every time we drive ( everyone has a near miss or accident story), we trust our hearts in love ( everyone has a broken heart tale ), history is filled with risk takers in play ( America was created by rebels taking risks). And likewise, business is the art of educated guesses entrepreneurs take to create commerce. Just as any other business owner, we interior designers take daily risks and gambles. Starting with the basic decisions of hiring staff. Will they represent my brand professionally, will they perform efficiently, will they be trustworthy? We take a risk every time we hire a vendor. Will they perform, will they deliver on time? Will their quality be what we demand for our clients? And ultimately we take a chance on the clients we choose to work with. Are they trustworthy? will they pay their invoices on time? Are they of good character? Do they match your work style? But risk taking is not easy and not for everyone. There is nothing stable, safe or certain about it. Not everyone enjoys the thrill of the up and down roller coaster and not everyone has the determination to take big chances.. But if the old adage “no risk, no reward” is true, the questions should really be “what are you willing to risk?”. And if you heart and soul say “everything”…… then do what ever it is, do it with passion and conviction.

What should our readers know about your business?
I started my interior design career as a hospitality designer and transitioned into luxury residential over 25 years ago. I own S.E.Design a luxury residential interior design studio in Los Angeles and Cabo, Mexico. My design career is filled with amazing experiences from haven been featured in multiple magazines, creating 2 amazing books, being brand ambassador for national products companies to meeting some of the most amazing people. My risks certainly provided reward and I have no regrets in any of my life choices.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Until Covid, I have been a bit of a globe trotter. There are so many countries, and cities I adore and enjoy spending time in. My books, as well as my design, general reflect a bit of my wonderlust. For me all itineraries involve a fabulous hotel, a get dirty lets go shopping activity, and gorgeous location for dinner with wine where we can review pictures and laugh. I like me home and where I live. So if Im leaving it, its not to sit around a hotel pool. My friends kind of know that a trip with me entails shopping and memorable experiences and adventures.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For me, design has always been the fun and easy part. It’s my natural talent. But the art of business and risk taking was new to me when I started my first design firm, and gathered almost all I know from my amazingly successful business owner and entreprenour clients who guided and helped me. Having mentors and people who can tell you about their successes and failures is intrical in the learning process.
