We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Zanville and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, what do you attribute your success to?
BE KIND, REWIND is the home of your favorite 90s events. I create events where DJs are playing your favorite 90s jams, you can walk into the room and see Friendship Bracelets, Slap Bracelets, Airheads, Warheads, Fanny Packs, and all of your favorite 90s memories in one space. And now I host virtual 90s trivia via Zoom, where I want you to walk into a night of your childhood. I believe that any success story needs to start with passion. This is what is the most important factor behind my success of BE KIND, REWIND. I created the 90s events because I genuinely love and am so passionate about the 90s! I believe that it is the last tangible decade, the last decade where we all remember playing games, memorizing every lyric to every CD we’ve purchased, collecting every Beanie Baby, having crushes on every 90s heartthrob, collecting every memorabilia of our favorite band or pop group and dancing our favorite dances like the Roger Rabbit and Running Man. You need to love your brand, love the meaning behind it, and literally know everything about it! Seeing everyone light up when they walk into any event or log onto the Zoom trivia, dressed up, singing along to their favorite 90s song, watching clips of their favorite 90s commercials, just brings me such joy. That is what I believe success is.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have worked in the hospitality industry for *cough* 19 years. I started as a Server and ended my hospitality career as a Regional Sales Manager for Special Events and Caterings at a restaurant corporation. Along the way, I managed family-owned restaurants, corporate restaurants, was Associate Director of Food Services at a movie studio, managed a restaurant in a hotel, and moved into Special Events. Now with Covid-19, there has been a career shift. I am now in the process of studying for my Real Estate Licence and focusing on evolving BE KIND, REWIND. While every job was unique in its own way, I continued working in the fields of guest service and hospitality. With so many ups and downs, my advice is to continue the hustle and know that if you lead with passion, you can succeed in anything!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many amazing places in Los Angeles! I’m born and raised here, and still learning about the city! But for visitors, you definitely need to check out some of my faves. For Italian Food, Antonios Pizzeria is a must! It’s in Sherman Oaks and is ran by the best brother-sister duo out there! For Greek Food, right across the street, The Great Greek is a go-to for sure! Driving to the beach is a must, visiting the classic Neptunes Net or grabbing a delicious Sandwich from Bay Cities Deli. Making your way to Sawtelle for some great Japanese food, K-Town for some of the best Korean BBQ spots, and of course the endless amount of awesome taco trucks! Once the world opens up more, you have to try the delicious cocktails at The Virgil and Tiki No for some fun tiki-style drinks! The list goes on!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am so grateful for everyone that has supported BE KIND, REWIND! From all of our 90s lovin’ pals that play Trivia monthly or have attended our events, from both our DJs, DJ Silly Kid and DJ Dubplates for playing the best 90s jams, from every bar and establishment such as The Virgil, R Bar, Saved by the Max, Tiki No, The Other Door, Lucky Strike in Hollywood, Bar One, The Falls Lounge and Miro Restaurant that has allowed us to spread the 90s love. I would not be here if it wasn’t for all of you! Party on!
