We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Blair and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” ― Toni Morrison

This quote by Toni Morrison is something I repeat to myself on a daily basis. I use it as a touchstone when I feel imposter syndrome beginning to creep in. It reminds me that even though there are myriad books out in the world for people to choose from, none of them will be the exact one that only I am able to infuse with my particular experiences and passions.

It also helps inform my decisions when heading into a brand new project. I’m constantly bombarded by story ideas, so many that it would be impossible to write them all. If it’s an idea that keeps popping up and nagging my mind, and I absolutely know that I need to read it, then I’m sure it’s the one I need to focus on.

When all is said and done with as many drafts, revisions, and edits that it takes to create a published book, there’s a good chance I’ll have read the same words innumerable times before it’s finished. It’s incredibly important for it to be a book I want to read. If I can get through all that and still love it, then I know other readers will love it too.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I published my first novel Darkness Shifting in 2016. I barely had any clue what I was doing, but I had a lot of support from other author friends and colleagues. It was a real leap of faith moment. There were times when I was wrestling with formatting issues, or on the phone with customer support, flying by the seat of my pants while also chasing around a toddler and preschooler. I wanted to give up so many times. Somehow it all came together. Then, I had my launch party and so many people showed up to get their books signed and wish me well. It was such an incredible surprise to discover that even though I was doing this without the backing of a traditional publisher, people still wanted to read my books.
Since then, I’ve published two more books in the Tides of Darkness series and I’m working on a new small town romance series. I love being able to pivot into new genres, and to really pay attention and connect with my readers one-on-one. It’s so satisfying to know that I’ve gained the expertise to be not only an author, but a cover designer, graphic designer, website manager, marketing guru, and so many other aspects of putting together a whole brand for myself as well as each different series. It’s given me a lot of confidence to know that I’m talented and capable, and that I can give my readers a satisfying journey from start to finish.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My absolute favorite spot is the Griffith Observatory. It’s iconic, and the views at sunset are absolutely stunning. You can’t miss that. The best Mexican food I’ve ever eaten is at Gardens of Taxco in West Hollywood. It’s where the chicken is so tender, so fresh, “it tastes like it was boooorn in the sauce!” That place is a treasure. For something really touristy, Grauman’s Chinese Theater is also a lot of fun. I’m a huge fan of Lucille Ball, and one of my favorite episodes of I Love Lucy is when she breaks John Wayne’s footprints and tries to make new ones with his signature before anyone can notice. Being able to visit a location like that and feel that connection to all the classic Hollywood greats is something really special.

My writing partner Laura has been vital in my journey as an author. For the past twelve years, she’s encouraged me, and learned alongside me as we’ve grown together in independent publishing. We make a great team and know exactly how to challenge and uplift each other. I truly couldn’t do this without her!
