We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Boris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
I’m most happy when I feel free and that often happens when I’m walking. It also happens when I’m drawing or painting. I forget, time, worries, everything. I feel very lucky to have this artistic shelter which provides many joys, adventures and encounters. My practice as an artist is a safe space during the making. The process of creating makes me happy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Over the last few years I’ve created new bodies of artworks and I’m really excited to share these. I’ve been exploring modular art (modular art is art created by joining together units / modules to form larger compositions). It’s not something I pre-empted. The series is born from my new artist book ‘Rainbow’ published by Corners in Seoul. It’s actually stocked in the US at Katherine Small Gallery (https://ksmallgallery.com/collections/online/products/rainbow-1 and https://ksmallgallery.com/collections/online/products/rainbow-2-gray). What I like with my artist’s books is the idea that it’s art in an accessible form. Making books has also become a way to sketch new ideas. I start by making a book manually and then propose it to a publisher. Thereafter it leads to a series of new artworks. From juxtaposing two of the books, a conversation between form and color was born. I then started making pencil drawings, the completed series includes 104 drawings. It’s my biggest hand made artwork so far. One thing that’s been particularly important for me in this series is the idea of gesture and texture. I’ve used Prismacolor pencils which are amazing.

Most of my recent artworks include symbols, from hearts, rainbows, clovers as the project described above or another one that I can’t quite reveal yet until its launch. One might say that I am going through a care bear phase, I see the symbols as connectors or perhaps even lucky charms. One of my favorite projects in this vein was the Heart Benches I made as part of a public art commission for the contemporary art festival in Saumur which was curated by Mathias Courtet in 2021. Adults and children alike were enchanted and that’s what I hope to do with some of my artworks: to enchant, bring joy and poetry.

I’ve also just created a textile piece for a hotel in London (one hundred shoreditch). It’s a huge cloth artwork. I like that art can be live outside of galleries or the privacy of people’s homes. Here anyone stepping into the hotel lobby can see it. I’d love to do more artworks in spaces like this or the public space.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m leading a bit of a nomad life these days but my best advice for food is to check places which have natural wine as usually the food is really good there. They take particular care in chosing products.

In London, I would recommend:
— for art: always to visit Tate Modern. They currently have a beautiful exhibition on by Yoko Ono and they have commissions in the Turbine Hall which is one of the places with the highest ceiling even. I also love Thomas Dane Gallery in central London. Approach Gallery, TJ Boulting Gallery, Chisenhale Gallery are also great places to visit. The Institute of Contemporary Arts where I used to work has a great film programme. For music, ICA and Café Oto is good.
— for walks: Walking along Regent’s Canal. Victoria Park

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Actually MR MR Studio who recommended me for this interview deserve a shoutout. They are immensely talented and supportive and I’ve just seen a new project they released recently for an office space. It’s a beauty and has left sparkles in my eyes. It’s definitely worth interviewing them again so they can share their new wondrous works and journey.
