We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Hinesley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor in growing my career as a musician would be engaging my curiosity. Whether that’d be trying new things, asking questions, talking with people who’ve created success in their fields, etc. These things have helped me figure out what aspects of music I want to continue developing as well as finding what my strengths are.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a musician and my main instrument is piano, however I do a variety of music related things! This past year I’ve taken an interest in music directing and arranging for live performances/tours. I’ve had the opportunity to learn from a handful of people this past year who music direct professionally and through that gained the tools to start music directing myself. In May of this year, I had the chance to arrange and music direct a North America tour for an artist named UMI. Getting the opportunity to arrange a 75 minute set and support someone’s creative vision meant so much to me. Through this, I pushed my limits to what I thought I was capable of doing and learned so much. Now, I feel confident in my capabilities to help other artists with their performances.
When I’m not music directing or playing keys, I’m most likely writing and producing. Earlier this year, I started a piano project under the name “Zaya Lyn” which has been a healing creative outlet. I’m excited to keep growing this project and honing in on my production skills.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s so many fun options to chose from! I’d probably start with brunch at the Openaire, which is a restaurant in Koreatown that’s in a greenhouse. It’s so beautiful and the natural lighting is amazing. Then next I’d probably make my way over to my favorite coffee shop in the surrounding area called “MCO Coffee”. Their drinks are named after the owner’s dogs! Then I’d take a walk at the Huntington Gardens where we could admire all the nature and my favorite part, the bonsai garden. I’d end the day by picking up takeout and heading over to Elysian park to watch the sunset and have dinner.
Some of my favorite things to do on any given week include various pop-ups, concerts or spending time in nature. There’s so much to do in this city so the options are truly endless.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout all my close collaborators, friends and family for continually supporting and pushing me. Whether it’d be a friend explaining how something works or just lending an ear, the support has meant a lot. Also want to express gratitude for those who’ve played mentorship roles in my life, such as Patrice Rushen and Russell Ferrante, as well as many more who’ve provided me with the knowledge to succeed.
