Meet Satya Reyes | Joy Midwife and Death Doula

We had the good fortune of connecting with Satya Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Satya, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up in a small town in Michigan and had the delight of having land to explore and many animals to care for and play with. I’ve been in Los Angeles for over 30 years now though! Longer than I lived in Michigan.
It’s funny isn’t it, how we don’t always know how good we had it until it’s out of our reach? Once I had children, I really wished I could raise them in the same way I was, with ponds and trees to play in and frogs to catch. I’m dreaming now, 30 years later, of getting back to a small town with a creek running through my back yard.
My connection to nature really informed my life and I can certainly see this looking back. Nature is my church now and where I go to connect to myself, my Source and of course the trees and wildlife. Nature is the perfect place to de-charge energies that a sensitive being like me can get overloaded with. We are nature afterall, so it’s really just going home and that’s why I feels so right.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
With all the challenges I had personally and we all had collectively during the lockdowns and after, while also being greatly challenged as a single Mom to 2 amazing daughters, I was FRIED. I really needed a change so I followed what I call my PGS (personal Guidance System) to Mexico for 4 months where I did almost nothing and just reset my nervous system. I was ready for something new as an empty nester and woman of a “certain age” in addition to the incredible Wellness Center that I’m a part of in Manhattan Beach,
Heal Los Angeles.
I was soul searching and listening/ watching for any sign that would tell me what was next.
25 years of doing Healing/Holistic facials as well as being a medium and doing events for Soho House and Goop etc, was amazing and, I could feel something else wanting to be born in this next phase of my life… I was in transition.
I honestly don’t remember how I came a cross it but I suddenly knew I was going to be a Death Doula! You know what’s funny about that? I came to LIFE in a way that I didn’t know was possible.
I quickly realized that, along with my new training, I was bringing ME, my sense of joy, play and my 25 years of skills and lifelong gifts to this new work… and it feels like the most honorable thing I could possibly do. I love it!
It became very clear, very quickly that my new found love of death work is completely about living fully until our last breath. So now that is naturally infused in everything I do. My desire is to take the phobia out of talking about death and to open the conversation as well as sitting in loving care with those at the end of their life. My dream now is to live this life and all it has to offer us, fully and take you along with me on this wild and wonderful jour way of life with all my offerings.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well we’d for sure go see Lauren at Soul Bungelow and do a little shopping in Hermosa Beach. After that we’d walk on the beach, catch an amazing sunset and hopefully find some music at the Lighthouse and dance!
I also love Rockerfeller’s Steak Frittes and happy hour in Redondo Beach as well as live music at R10 on Sundays.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first spiritual and Reiki teacher, Diane Vaughn Burkenshaw really changed it all for me. She recognized me, and the goodness at my core! Ultimately she held up a mirror of love for me to see myself as both human and holy. I learned what my gifts were with her loving guidance and she kicked off my now 25 years of study and initiations as an energetic artist committed to Love as my service.
Also, my father who so appreciated my “moxie’ died a dozen years ago and being at his death opened something for me that took a while to actualize as I was busy being a single Mom and we know how that can be!! PHEW….
Kathy too… A client I had for about a year, she died a bit before my Dad and not only did I have the honor of working with her as an Energy Healer and Spiritual Coach, but I was invited into her home her last week of hospice.
I did a “healing” on Kathy and she fell fast asleep, giving her the rest she needed. When I came back the next day, she said “Satya, I thought for sure I had died because I felt a sense of peace I never imagined was possible ” The honor I felt is indescribable as well as the expansive and otherworldly amount of what I could only describe and Joy and Love as she passed. This experience and the one with my Dad, stayed with me until one day, almost a year ago, I became a Death Doula, adding this to my offerings. It is so fulfilling to be a beacon of joy and love to usher people out during their last transition.
