Meet Saybin Roberson | Founder & Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Saybin Roberson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Saybin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was tired of being told “no” and being denied for jobs and things I was sure I was qualified for. There was even basic level positions I’d get rejected from, so I took it as a sign from God to go into business for myself, clearly, He wanted different or more for and from me. So I followed and gave myself the freedom to do exactly what I wanted by creating one x three, my little safe space.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My business is my art. one x three is my art, it’s my place for freedom with hopes of gaining financial freedom from my efforts. What sets it apart, is me. That’s a line I’ve used to remind myself of my worth and skill for a while now – a mantra of mine so to say. I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to have writers outside of myself on the site. To be able to teach and give opportunities to young writers as they learn the ropes of journalism. All it takes is one chance, and I’m able to give that as it was given to me just a year ago. I published my first article in January of 2019 in the Detroit Metro Times newspaper and from there I spent the next few months working full-time at a job I pretty much hated. May of that same year, I decided to take the chance after connecting with an editor for the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper. From there, I quit my 9-6 and went into writing full-time. It’s been a journey and in just a year I’ve managed to gain four new platforms to write for and experiences that literally, I would have never imagined. However, some of the biggest challenges have been the MANY rejections, which I countered by creating my own platform. It’s new and it’s growing, but it’s everything I wanted to be and will only continue to be that. It’s Black, it’s sexy, it’s creative, it’s dark, it’s authentic. We only tell the stories we actually care about. It’s really the biggest lesson of them all, create your own thing. Own your own stuff. Nobody will hand it to you, so get it by any means necessary. We are creatives by nature for a reason, to create.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Depending on what city we’re talking about, food is always top of the list. If I was home, it’s a must to eat at coney island, taste a Vernors, and experience the liveliness of the city. In Los Angeles, as I’m still pretty new to the city, I hang out, eat, and live in Inglewood. With me being slightly a homebody, I usually take everyone to the beach, Simply Wholesome, and Harun Coffee.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I’d like to dedicate this to my team. I have a lot of supporters, but the girls who contribute to my platform are greatly appreciated. Each one was able to see the potential and completely fit perfectly within the realms of one x three. Forever grateful. My family also, the biggest motivation. Each person pursuing their own goals and really attacking them has been inspiring, shout out Private Stock Collective.
