We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Frenzel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, what do you attribute your success to?
Experimentation. I starting creating content on TikTok at the beginning of the pandemic. It was this platform that was quickly growing and it felt like a now or never moment. So I downloaded it. I knew I was an entertainer at heart, but I hadn’t really found my avenue for entertaining. I started making pretty simple, lip sync videos, but then I started to branch out more. I’d do little absurd list videos, who you are based on your shoe choice, your favorite drag queen. Then I started making skits. My first video I remember being really celebrated for was called “Fan Groups I’m Most Afraid Of” it was parodying fan culture at the same time it was appreciating. it. Selena Gomez fans could tank my credit score, K-Pop stans are more organized than the CIA. It was taking this whit that I always had, and putting it out there alongside pop culture – and it worked! From there it spiraled into anything my crazy brain decided to create. Things I Thought Were Cheap as a Kid (and was shocked to find out they’re incredibly expensive) – nuts, trashcans, bed sheets. An ode to growing up and moving out, but centering my unique wit in the relatable conversation. I would come up with these series ideas, and some would work (and some certainly didn’t – Who the Avatar Characters would’ve voted for in the election is one I regret making) But it helped me find that wonderful cross-section, where things I enjoy creating and things viewers enjoy watching meet. I think as a creator, as a business owner, that’s the cross-section we’re all searching for and it takes experimentation to get there.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Hi! I’m Scott Frenzel, I’m a comedian and content creator with a platform of 800,000 amazing followers on TIkTok. I moved to LA not really knowing why, but knowing that it was the place for me. I dipped in and out of freelance marketing jobs and kept a restaurant job on the side, I just trusted my gut that the right path would present itself. When the pandemic started I downloaded TikTok and that’s when things really began to take off. TikTok differs from other social media platforms because most viewers spend a majority time watching the “for you” page. This is the main page of the platform that uses a genius algorithm to tailor content specifically to what you enjoy as an individual. Whether that be comedy, politics, finance, cooking, the algorithm figures you out pretty quickly.

I started posting videos daily and the numbers started to grow quickly. These series I would create like Things Everybody Said on Their Elementary School Playground (and I have no idea where they came from) – “spell I-C-U-P!” and my Teachers: High School vs. College skits earned me millions of views. I hit 100,000 followers in a couple months, then 200,00 a month later and then about 100,000 a month after that. It’s been a fun ride and I’m so excited to see where it takes me when the world opens up and I’m able to perform for people live.

As far as challenges go, where the experience has been mostly positive of course there have been challenges. It’s easy as a creator to put your worth in the amount of views and likes you get. I hit a point where I realized if you care less about the numbers and more about the community you’re building and the people you’re making laugh, it makes the process of creating a lot more enjoyable.

Another challenge came as the world and especially our country has been rocked by social issues this year, and there is this odd pressure for people with a platform to speak on them. It took me time to realize I had to speak on these issues in a way that felt natural to me & my brand. One of the videos I’m most proud of is a High School vs. College teacher video where a female student asks the high school teacher if she can use the restroom and he says, “no, we’re learning about the Pythagorean theorem right now., can’t it wait?” To which she says, “but I’m bleeding” and he (comically) doesn’t understand what she’s talking about. That video has 3.8 million views. Reading the flood of comments, and women who had experienced that exact conversation as high schoolers made me feel like I brought a lot of awareness to the way we talk about periods and the kindness a teacher should have towards the way young people’s bodies are changing at that age.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Morning coffee at Priscilla’s in Toluca Lake is a must. It’s a wonderful, family-run spot that keeps the real stars and Hollywood execs caffeinated. And one of the owners, Shannon, even dropped a coffee off for me when I had to isolate in my room with COVID. She couldn’t be sweeter. Whenever people say people in LA are rude and stuck up, I tell them they need to get new friends, I’ve met some of the most incredible & kind-hearted people here.

I love the Warner Bros Studio Tour! I think it’s a really cool and funducational (wow hate myself for saying that) look at how film & TV is really made, while still dazzling you with the real costumes, sets, etc from your favorite films & TV.

And for dinner I have to shout out the Granville restaurants (Pasadena, Burbank, Studio City and West Hollywood) who helped me pay my rent for years (and who’s food is really incredible – try the pork chop!!)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My roommate and producing partner Lindsay St. Laurent for encouraging me and giving up the living room whenever I need to film content in it. The team at TikTok for creating a platform that is built to let individuality and creativity shine and my amazing mother for always encouraging me to do what makes me happy.
