We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Holman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, what role has risk played in your life or career?
How often do we hear family, friends, and/or acquaintances say that they hate their jobs and wish they could have their own business, but are too afraid? So, they stay stuck and miserable where they are. I was like that. I was in staff jobs working for people I didn’t like, who didn’t respect me, and doing work I thought I liked doing, but I really didn’t. I thought I was doing what I was suppose to do and I was miserable. Now, there’s nothing wrong with a staff job. That works for many people. But, there are those of us that want to take that road less traveled, be our own boss, and live life by our own rules and schedules. So, one has to choose their risk. Working for one company all your life in a staff job is a choice. The idea of quitting that job and working for yourself can be scary. As we know, “no risk, no reward,” and it takes courage, faith in oneself and abilities, unwavering perseverance, and truly believing in the work you’ve chosen. Many years ago, I lost my staff job because the economy tanked. I was essentially forced to start working for myself and haven’t looked back since. There may be times where you struggle and question what the hell you’re doing, but being your own boss is a reward in itself. The time and energy you put into your work has more value because it’s all yours. If someone comes to me faced with a life changing personal or professional risk, I tell them to do what I do. I ask myself, “at the end of my life, will I regret not doing this or that thing?” It’s a simple question and I always get an answer. There’s freedom and power in allowing yourself that choice.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

It became increasingly important to me that my work had some kind of social impact and that I wanted to be a healing presence in my community. Becoming a Reiki Master and Transformational Coach and starting Reiki Daddy means that I can help people in their own transformation and to face whatever challenges they may be confronting. What is very important in doing this kind of work is being authentic. For me that means being educated and trained (including ongoing research and training), and practiced. When you’re working with a person’s energy, life, emotions, personality, etc., you can’t just wing it. There has to be a substantive level of proficiency. I believe that’s a tremendous responsibility and you’d be surprised at how many who do this work are not trained and take shortcuts to calling themselves a healer. With coaching, it’s amazing to work with people on that transformative level. To see people shift their lives in a direction that’s more positive and in-line with how they envision life for themselves. That can look like establishing a life path and defining goals. It could mean developing a healthier mind/body lifestyle that incorporates diet, exercise, and meditation. It could also be about learning to operate from a place of one’s self-worth and power. With reiki, it’s great to see people release unhealthy, negative energy. That release helps them emotionally, spiritually, and sometimes physically. The understanding is that if we’re stressed out for whatever reason, our energy is low, which makes us more susceptible to disease, depression, and anxiety. But, if we’re happy and our energy is high, we can be emotionally and physically healthier. A goal of mine with reiki, is to help people understand that it has a practical purpose. Reiki is increasingly offered in hospitals for overall wellness. For example, it is being used on cancer patients to help with healing and relief of treatment symptoms. Currently, my practice continues to be in a growth stage. As for many of us, Covid put a huge dent in practice and business building. But, I believe we’re at a point where growth is becoming more and more consistent. Pairing that with an increased interest in alternative forms of wellness, makes me excited to see where my practice goes and how it will evolve.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Where do I start? I always like to do a mix of regular daily life and cheesy touristy. I live near Runyon Canyon, so one of the things I always suggest doing is the hike up to the top. There’s beautiful views of the city and it just feels great to up there on a beautiful clear day. I also like walking up into the Hollywood Hills through the winding streets. If someone had never been to LA before, I’d take them over to Hollywood and Vine to see the Chinese Theater and the hand and foot prints, and the stars on the walk of fame. I would do a beach day north of the Santa Monica pier or down to Venice Beach for people watching. The Griffith Park Observatory is a must for newbies as well. If the friend is into museums then the Getty and the new Academy Museum are great options. I love Silver Lake to go for coffee or beer bust at the Eagle. There’s so much to do in LA and it’s ever changing, so I try to take people exploring so that I can find new places for me as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I believe that everyone we meet and every situation and challenge in life can be a teachable and influential moment. I do so much reading, watching, and listening that it’s hard not to be influenced by many viewpoints. There are many in my life that have believed in me, supported me, and encourage me—all have brought me to this moment today. But, one of my greatest influences in the past 3-4 years has been my teacher and coach, Chris Eagle. I went through a year-long process of reiki and coaching with him that was hugely transformative. He saw something in me that I did not about being a healer and teacher. This experience changed my perspective around how I saw myself and what I wanted to do with my life. Through this experience, I found that I was capable of being impactful on other’s lives and becoming an energy healer and coach came naturally to me in surprising ways, so I was encouraged to pursue my own professional path of helping people heal themselves. Chris taught me the importance of being a healing presence in this world and that we can all be that by being kinder and more present. That we can be influential just by living by example and therefore inspiring others to do the same. I still look to Chris when I’m feeling stuck in my own process and I always feel more grounded after our talks. Another shoutout goes to my partner, Francisco, who loves and supports me more than anyone in my life and truly believes I’m capable of helping many people. It’s amazing to have someone who truly has your back and sees your value every single day.
