We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Morris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more about the story behind your company and its purpose-driven mission?
In 2011, my wife and I were in Children’s Hospital Los Angeles with our son, Ryan. As he changed into his hospital gown, I remember my jaw dropping to the ground in utter shock. It looked like Ryan had lost twenty pounds overnight. There was clearly something attacking his body, and I had no idea how to make it better for him. I will never forget how helpless I felt in that moment. I made a promise then and there that I would do whatever I could to help him get better. Thus began my work with JDRF, the leading organization for Type 1 Diabetes research. What started as a simple sign-up for their annual walk turned into a 100-mile bike ride, serving on their board, and raising over $100,000 for research into better treatments, and eventually a cure. I decided I could have a greater impact if I build social purpose and Type 1 diabetes advocacy into my business. Now, every time I work with a client, I make a donation to JDRF. As I told my story, I learned that many people I worked with had similar stories about charities that were close to their hearts. I decided that, in addition to donating to JDRF, I would direct a donation to my client’s charity as well. The impact aspect of my business has grown to encompass so much more than just donations. Not only do we charge low fees to save clients tens of thousands of dollars so they can invest in their own goals, but we have expanded our giving initiatives to include partnering with local nonprofits. These partnerships have helped expand volunteer support, increase fundraising capabilities, and give these incredible organizations a larger platform to spread their message and make a lasting impact on our community. My team and I are here to make a difference, and we use our real estate and mortgage business as the engine to make this mission a reality. SRM Real Estate Group is a real estate and mortgage firm with a social impact purpose. We promise our clients to save them money, save them time, and that together we really can change lives for a better future.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a great, active morning in LA, I recommend a bike ride around Griffith Park. It is an amazing workout with views that are well worth the effort. For lunch, Poquito Mas is a quick stop for fresh Mexican food. Started and owned by a local Angelino, they have now grown to nine locations around Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, so you’re likely to find one close by no matter where you are. For afternoon fun, Dodger’s games come highly recommended. In their iconic stadium outside of downtown, you can see the boys in blue and grab a hearty Dodger dog for dinner. The other evening activity I would highly recommend is a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. The outdoor area makes for incredible shows and an electric atmosphere to make any trip to LA memorable.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am dedicating my shoutout to my team and especially to my wonderful wife and my two incredible children. I truly could not have made it to where I am today without the people that give me support every day. They are the reason I work so hard, and they are the reason I continue to grow and seek new ways to positively impact others.
