We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Dick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, what do you attribute your success to?
Making a “Flavorful not Painful” line of sauces and rubs. While others were going hotter and hotter, we focused on flavor and making sure that we made a quality sauce that could not only be used as a condiment that wouldn’t take over a meal with too much heat, but, that you could cook with our sauces and that they were friendly to the majority of people.
Yes, our sauces are vegan friendly too, we have no preservatives and we add no water. Just give our bottle a shake and look at how the sauce clings to the bottle. Our sauces never separate either, and they are table stable…yes, they do not have to be refrigerated after opening.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Self employed since the age of 21. Ups and downs….oh ya. Ran blindly into many business opportunities with no plan at all, but, I learned from each one. The ups and downs of a partnership and how you better put in writing every little detail, job description, and duties or once it starts to grow and money gets involved, people change, and break ups rarely end nicely.
Have a clear vision, one example is our fun little sand soccer tournament that we put on for the kids once a year on the beach in Huntington Beach. The vision was clear, something fun for families to come and do where the kids will gain a greater love for the game…it now brings over 12,000 people to the beach for a fun weekend.
Having the tournament allowed us to put time into creating Redbeards. With focus and planning and self funding we have gone from buying 50 to 100 bottles at a time to now buying over 15,000 bottles at a time and we are still growing and looking at the next steps of the plan.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is So Cal. First the tourist stops, Disney, Knotts, Universal, Magic Mountain because, who doesn’t love roller coasters?…they can choose which ones….stops not roller coasters!
The beach for a bon fire and S’mores. Catalina because it is so close. Then Temecula for wine, LA because it is LA and you just pick a spot, park and walk, and the food choices in LA are endless. Mexican food because there are so many choices. And, if time allows we would take them down to Mexico too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
E. Joseph Cosman was my first real in-depth look at marketing. He opened my eyes to understanding once you have a product that is a quality product for the public, you are only 1 % of the way there. You have to get the word out.
And of course, My wife Carolyn who has been so supportive and a partner in the creation and growth of Redbeards Hot Sauce
