We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Galligan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sean, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
1. Collaboration – I’ve always believed that real estate works best if all parties are working together, not against each other. I’m always happy to help out an agent/client on the other side of a deal, and often, I, and my clients, have benefitted from their help as well. 2. Constantly Learning – it’s not enough to regurgitate a headline, people want guidance from agents who are researched, know the market and walk the talk. I participate in the top real estate coaching program in the country (Tom Ferry) and am very active in the market, not only as a realtor, but as an investor. Staying ahead of trends and having multiple properties & tenants to constantly maintain, I feel confident advising clients from a position of knowledge and strength.
3. Empathy – this is learned, but understanding it and practicing it are two different things. Selling or buying a house is an enormously stressful, unfamiliar thing for a lot of people – and it’s expensive. Care and kindness need to be shown along the way… to all parties involved in a deal.
4. Always answering the phone – it’s critical that clients know they can reach me when they need me. And same with potential clients, vendors, family, etc… People today expect realtime results & instant gratification. Letting clients sit with, or worse, sleep on, anxiety because they can’t get a hold of me is not something I will allow.
5. Staying active – whether in the gym, on a run or on the tennis court, the key to surviving a long day is having the energy to do so.
6. Drinking lots of water – There is no replacement for staying hydrated. Period.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
After a 17-year career in media and advertising, most of it in New York, I moved to Los Angeles with a very small sphere of influence and a love for real estate. I got my license in the first year and threw myself into meeting people. Since I played in college, I joined a tennis club. I founded a networking group with 2 other folks that is now an 18-person group and represents about 40% of my business each year – it also introduced me to the CPA, trust/estate attorney, lender, insurance agent, & health insurance agent that I use in my own life. The root of my success is working hard, empathy… and NEVER focusing on the money. It’s about service to you clients and collaboration. I very truly believe that real estate can, and should, be fun for everyone.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love a drive out to Malibu, taking Mulholland from the 101 in Hollyood all the way through the mountains. Lobster roll at Malibu Seafood. For a tourist day we’d hit the Academy Museum & Petersen Auto Museum, with a lunch stop at Monsiuer Marcel at the Farmer’s Market for fondue. For a chill neighborhood night, we’d grab Mexican at what I call Storage Tacos (Tacos El Chido) on Santa Monica & Citrus in the parking lot of the public storage facility followed by ice cream at Van Leeuwen in Franklin Village. No trip to LA is complete without Musso & Frank’s, or a meal at Rao’s, since it was impossible to get into in NYC. Perhaps some doubles at the Toluca Lake Tennis Club followed by the best turkey club in the city at Joan’s on Third.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The credit for my story goes to 1) my parents & sister for always supporting me. 2) the Tom Ferry Coaching Program, who keep me on track, ahead of the trends & provide a strong network of referral agents across the US and beyond. 3) my network of advisors ranging from lenders, attorneys, insurance folks, vendors, etc… 4) my clients for trusting me to help them & for making every day different and inspiring.
