We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean MacDonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I have always been one to take risks and I have taken leaps my entire career. I believe that risks are imperative to growth, learning and improvement with the potential for greater success. Without them we can stay stagnant. I find with taking risks it’s important to determine beforehand how it can impact your life and what direction it will push you whether you good or bad.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a chef and creative. I’ve been a chef for over 15 years now. There have always been ups and downs as there always are in everyone’s career. It’s been an uphill battle constantly pushing to improve myself as a chef and business person to achieve my goals. I’m 33 years old now, becoming an executive chef at 23, being recognized as the best young chef in Canada at 24, opening my first restaurant at 27 and now owning two restaurants in Los Angeles, Bar Monette and Burgette. Nothing has come easy, it’s always been hard work and growth. But it’s about the resilience you have to have everyday, striving for excellence and success. The drive and passion to not give up and to always be better everyday.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would send them to Artelice Patisserie. They are great friends of mine and I think they make some of the best pastries in LA. I would say to grab breakfast at Tartine or Great White. I would obviously book them a table at either of my restaurants to come and hang out but also tell them to go to my good friend Nan’s restaurant, Kinkan. I love what Evan Funke is doing as well so I would recommend them going to any of his spots. Also love Saffys.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife and family for always being such a great support system while I navigate life and achieving my goals.
