We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Miguel Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean Miguel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Whenever I met actors after their graduation showcases, I would ask them about their plans on entering the industry and where their goals lied. I would learn that even though these actors were talented in their craft, they hadn’t been educated in the business of Show Business.
Throughout the years I would also help actors create their packages – ensure that it was industry ready. And I did it for free. Because I had so much information and wanted to help as many actors as possible. It got to the point where actors were telling me to charge and when I wouldn’t accept, they would just give me cash or transfer it over.
And so from there, Q&Agent was born – a consulting company to help actors understand and navigate the industry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been a performer – a born performer. Constantly singing karaoke, learning dances from music videos and playing pretend with my friends, it wasn’t until I was 8 years old and my mother asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up and I said “I want to be a singer” – I knew I was on my life path.
I studied a Cert IV in Music Theatre and then a Bachelor of Music (Music Theatre), I moved back to Sydney, Australia and started pursuing the industry! Freelanced on my own for a year and booked myself 20+ paid bookings, I got an agent at the end of that year. This really taught me that knowing the business puts you on show!
When I first started in the industry, it was hard because diversity wasn’t a thing. Ethnic, Sexual, Neuro and other forms of diversity didn’t exist – it was rare to see someone who looked like me on screen or stage. Thankfully today, there’s a lot more opportunity. And so for me, I want to inspire children who look like me. I want them to see me and know that they too are seen. That they exist. That they are worthy of being on screen and stage.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am all about food in LA but specifically Dollar Hits in Historic FilipinoTown is one of my favourite spots to be! Not only is it delicious filipino food but also you can hear all the aunties having their gossip sessions, the uncles having a great laugh and everyone having a round of karaoke.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
David Rountree, Film Director and Owner of LA Acting Studios, has been an amazing mentor to me. For a number of years, not only has he helped me become a better actor, but also a writer, director and overall human.
