We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Price and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting Pricetone was about freedom and finding happiness. I have always been so passionate about music and engineering, but I spend years interning and working for other people making their music. I felt like I got lost in the industry, just another person trying to fight to the top, making other people’s music. When I started my own recording studio, it was the hardest and scariest thing I’ve ever done but also the most liberating. I was able to be myself and forge my own path. There have been so many ups and downs, but I’ve always been in charge of my own fate, instead of following someone else, and that has been entirely worth it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started writing and engineering my own music as a kid. I always knew this was what I wanted to do, growing up I drove my sister crazy with the noise. There was always music blasting from my room, it got so bad I had to move out to the garage so I didn’t keep everyone up at night. It was amazing. Eventually I sought higher education and training in Audio Engineering as well as post, and then moved to LA to chase the dream. After years of interning and working for others, learning as much as I could, I started my own Recording Studio. I cannot emphasize enough how hard it was. There was setback after setback, whether it was the closure of the building I was operating out of or just being a small fish in a big pond. To make it here you have to want this more than anything. There was one point I basically lived in the studio. What I have learned is to worry less about what SHOULD be happening and more about finding other artists who share your passion and appreciate your talents. Create that community and everyone thrives. Succeeding is about creating community and keeping faith in yourself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are actually a lot of cool spots in Burbank. Right around the corner from us is Lincoln Brewery which is a great local spot. Downtown Burbank has awesome food. Obviously it is situated right in the middle of LA’s most iconic tourist spots, but more than that it is a peaceful slice of old hollywood. It can sometimes feel.a little like stepping back in time here. The best way to get to know Burbank is checking out the local eateries and meeting people.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Like so many people, I have to shout out to my parents. They have supported me through every high and every single failure. And there has been A LOT of failure. There inevitably is in this industry, it’s the nature of music. You have to fail to get better. Even when I was losing faith in myself they never did. I know without their support I could. never have gotten to this point.
