We had the good fortune of connecting with Seann Altman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Seann, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking the risk is the first step to anything. We take risks everyday big or small. But if we didn’t take them we wouldn’t achieve the things we want in life. Taking a risk is taking a chance and that’s for everything in life including your career. Falling in love is a risk, but it’s a risk that’s worth the taking. Finding success in what you love to do is also worth that same risk in my eyes. The risk of happiness is in pursuit of what we love in life. I took the risk of experimenting with my style against the gender norms. I fell in love with fashion and style and I took the risk to share my love with the world by sharing my outfits online. I took the risk of being judged by the world but it was all worth it because I am happier in myself and in my Identity now then I ever was before. My hope was to inspire others to live in their authenticity and have fun with fashion and themselves. Live without rigid restrictions and boundaries and be free. The risk to be free and authentic to your true self is worth that risk.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love fashion and I have always loved the process of styling and putting an outfit together. I love having occasions and places or themes to create outfits for. I have a giant closet full of accessories and clothes. I view my closet as my paint and myself as a canvas. A picture is worth a thousand words well I think the same can be said about an outfit especially if you take a picture in it.
What sets me apart from others is that I think fashion was an outlet for me to express my femininity. I am AMAB. So growing up I was taught through society what it meant to be a “guy” and I was taught what things were traditionally masculine. Early in my life I tried forcing aspects of masculinity into my life because I was a “guy” and I tried my best to reject anything considered traditionally feminine even when a lot of feminine things felt more natural and true to who I was as a person. I eventually got to a point where I didn’t want to live my life so rigidly and I just wanted to explore myself without inhibitions on what it means to be masculine or feminine and how that relates to your gender. So I think what sets me apart is my journey to get to where I am today and how that journey of embracing my femininity instead of trying to hide it has in turn influenced my outfits and my personal style.
The process of embracing my femininity was not easy. I definitely went through periods of time where I felt extremely alone. It was hard to feel truly seen for who I was and a lot of the time I felt like I was a joke to the outside world. I think what kept me going was just perseverance. I knew who I was at my core and nothing anyone could say or do could change who I was at my core. So I think just looking deep inside yourself and being in touch with your core is what helped me overcome any challenges I faced when it came to embracing my femininity and challenging the gender norm.
Big lessons I’ve learned along the way have been, 1. you can’t control other peoples perception of you, your perception of yourself is the only thing you have control over, there is no point in worrying about things you have no control over 2. Retail therapy is a myth it won’t fix your problems but dressing up for yourself and embracing your creativity can actually fix a lot of problems you have within yourself. 3. When it comes to creativity rely on yourself for validation stop seeking validation in others and try your best to validate yourself from a critical standpoint. You are your worst critic that can be used to your advantage or to your downfall. Pick and choose what your critique and what you pick problems with be careful. What you pick problems with can be detrimental and not beneficial. Make sure your problems with yourself come from a place of loving yourself and not from a place of disliking or hating yourself. A lot of these lessons can be used for anything in life but these are some big ones I have learned in my journey.
I want the world to know me as someone who lives their life authentically. I want the world to feel joy when they see my outfits. I want to inspire others to live in their truth and have fun with fashion. Fashion and dressing up is an art form. It’s part of self expression. And self expression is the best way to heal and learn about who you are.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For clothes, I would say checkout the Silverlake flea market and also the Goodwill in Los Feliz. Also definitely checkout Wasteland on Melrose, there are also a couple cool thrift stores along that strip too that you can stop into like the thrift store ‘2nd Street.’
Places I love to eat, are definitely brunch at Great White definitely get the blue Açaí Bowl and the Fish Tacos that’s my fav! Also I love going to this place called Yuko Kitchen it’s so cute in there and it’s nice to be surrounded by so many plants! Also for really good Japanese food go to Little Tokyo and find this place called Izakaya Bizan it’s my favorite I’ve been so many times! It’s on the top floor on the mall that has the Daiso in it.
But yeah my favorite places in LA are definitely Silverlake, Echo Park, Melrose, and Little Tokyo!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think my parents deserves the biggest shoutout in my success and where I am in life. I would not be where I am without their continuous and unconditional support. There were times at the start of my career where there were concerns about pursuing such a public and online career. There was fear of judgment from the world in their eyes. But even through their fear they supported me in my endeavors and helped me get to where I am. My mother and father have been behind the camera to help me get photos or videos for content so many times. They are pros at it now at this point. But even beyond just helping me create the content sometimes. They also helped me move out on my own and helped me time and time again with giving me everything I needed to get myself situated so I could pursue what I love to do. They are also always there for me and are just a FaceTime/phone call away when I get overwhelmed. Sometimes being online and being judged by so many can be overwhelming and they are always there to talk me through it and to help keep me grounded. My parents keep me sane through their continuous and unconditional support in me. Without them I don’t think I would be able to do what I do.
