We had the good fortune of connecting with Sergio Manique Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sergio, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music came into my life in an organic way. When I started learning drums, I quickly realized that what I was learning in school wasn’t fulfilling. I spent majority of my time practicing, analyzing, going to live shows and absorbing as much music as possible. After graduating high school I started studying economics and realized I will have to make a decision. At that time I was already playing shows on regular basis. Music kept me very busy everyday so I decided to audition to a music school and keep doing what I love.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m really proud that I keep going and creating almost everyday. I’m happy that all the challenges haven’t affected the relationship I have with my passion. I have been choosing music over and over from the moment I started and I don’t plan to change that. It hasn’t always been easy. The pandemic was and still is a difficult time to be an artist. I learnt that there’s always a way and a solution to every situation. It’s crucial to be determined and move forward.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely share a little bit of home by going to Natas Pastries, which turned out to be the only Portuguese restaurant in Los Angeles. Bacalhau com natas, pastel de nata and a good coffee. I think I would show them some beautiful places in nature, which I believe to be one of California’s biggest attributes. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be able to pursue an artistic career without the support of my family. They gave me a very strong foundation to build on. My mum, dad, sister and my girlfriend have all shown me endless support and encouragement. I also have a lot of respect for my teachers and the community at Berklee College of Music. Being in that environment has really helped me to grow as a musician and as a person.
