We had the good fortune of connecting with Shadi Beral and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shadi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was that I’d get the ability to do whatever I want that makes me happy while making others happy, watch something grow from the ground up, and get to be there for my family. There are many positive aspects when it comes to being a business owner. The flexibility that comes with being a business owner is spectacular. I can manage my business from anywhere, at anytime. Business has always been my passion, but so has motherhood. I’ve always wanted to be a hands-on mom that is there for every drop off, pick up, school event, supermarket run, meals, bed time, and every thing else that comes with hands-on parenting. Being a business owner allows me to do all of that.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our cosmetic laser whitening treatment is considered by industry insiders to be the best. The whitening results are impressive and the “Wow!” factor is huge. This treatment delivers exceptional results to people whose teeth have been stained by smoking or by substances like coffee, tea, cola drinks, and in general, teeth-staining foods and drinks. We are an upscale alternative to expensive dentist whitening services and those mall kiosks. We have competitive prices with proprietary services that rival or surpass dentist treatments, in a convenient, fast, affordable, trendsetting, spa environment, with relaxing music or we supply noise canceling Bose headphones for clients that prefer to listen to their own playlist. Our company is most proud of the hundreds and thousands of smiles we receive from our clients. We receive excellent feedback daily and have grown our repeat client base, thanks to word of mouth. We are proud of our customer service and it shows in our reviews on Yelp, Google, and Facebook. Our greatest satisfaction is seeing clients’ reaction to their new pearly whites.

It takes 15-30 minute sessions to lighten teeth by two to ten shades. The immediate results aren’t the only thing that has made Smile Labs popular. The services cost $139 for a single treatment or $189 for a double session. That’s roughly one-quarter of what dentists charge.

The biggest obstacle was expanding our client base the first couple years. Teeth whitening was not so popular when we first opened in 2012. It was tough introducing teeth whitening as a commonly done service, like hair or nails. Teeth whitening now falls second behind hair in the beauty industry. It has gotten incredibly popular and is convenient since you don’t need to visit your dentist to get your teeth whitened and offers an alternative to the expensive over the counter products that will not be as effective as laser whitening.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow – tough question! Los Angeles is full of life. First, I’d take them to SmileLabs LA for a fun teeth whitening experience! Haha. I would probably take them to the Santa Monica Pier, bike riding at the Venice Boardwalk, Zuma beach in Malibu, hike at Solstice Canyon, dinner at my favorite restaurant in Beverly Hills, Steak 48, and end the night in West Hollywood for the night life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As a child, every weekend, and often times after school, I stood behind the cash register at my dads beauty supply and salon in Hollywood and bagged products. It was a huge shop, with clients including Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, and Nick Carter, to name a few. Watching my dad run his business while being a hands-on father really motivated me to be just like him. He’s always been my role model. I wouldn’t be who I am as a human and business owner without him. He’s always been so kind, honest, caring, and compassionate, and because of that, his customers and staff loved him. I also want to give a shout out to my lovely husband, Arash, who has been so supportive of every business decision I’ve made from the moment I met him. As a business attorney, he is incredibly intelligent and has a ton of experience. He continues to advise and help me grow in so many ways. He has stepped in many times, taking care of our children while I had to attend to my business.
