We had the good fortune of connecting with Shadows Hold and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shadows, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Deciding whether to keep going or give up has always been a tough decision throughout my time being an artist. For me, the deciding factors come down to if am I really enjoying the creation of my music or am I forcing the artistic process to create something new. I want my work to be a genuine representation of the inside of my mind through audio, and if the music doesn’t feel like me I decide to pivot my creative process into an authentic depiction of who I am. There has been many times I felt like throwing music out the window for good, sometimes I still do, but I stop to realize that there are people in the world that genuinely enjoy my music more than I. Music has always been something that has helped me through tough times and if my music has the power to do that for someone else I am more than happy to push through these feelings of giving up for them.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In the start of Shadows Hold I released my first track “Visceral” in 2023 with the intent of having fun with music and releasing it just to show my friends what I’ve made. I was almost certain that no one else would hear it except for the ones that I told about it. From there it sprouted into way more than what I have though it would with people from all over the world listening to my tracks (crazy to me). I like blending a mix of Darkwave and Postpunk throughout my discography and creating a hybrid project that gives my music a swing of emotions throughout all of my tracks which I love. When creating Shadows Hold some of the biggest obstacles I’ve encountered was knowing little to nothing about music, I pretty much just hit random notes till it sounded cool and went with it! That’s when the lifesaver of YouTube came in for my random questions. Slowly I started to create my own unique style of production to make music. As Shadows Hold, I want the world to know that I create a sound that resonates with lovers of the obscure by transforming personal experiences into music that offers both an escape and a connection to something indescribable.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely would try and find a cool show to go to in LA. Some place like Das Bunker. Then I absolutely love going to underground shows so that would for sure be on the list too. It would be a must to visit a few dark clubs like Club Dominion or Bar Sinister in LA. For some amazing food/beer id take them to Wurstküche in DTLA or if we are feeling relaxed go to Death and Co next door. So many unique spots!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There has been many people that have helped me in my music journey to get me where I am today. To the channels on YouTube that has promoted my music, radio stations adding me to their mixes, friends fueling me with their encouragement, and listeners who enjoy what I put out. Most of all I would like to thank my friend J6 who has been the second hand in Shadows Hold through helping me with online content and assisting me at my live shows. I am grateful for his encouragement and help to create what Shadows Hold is today. I would also like to shout out my friend Danny (BSP) for being a supportive person from the start of my journey, my friends in DUSTBOWLCHAMPION for being the genuine people they are, my friends Natalie, Brian, and Jorge for encouraging me in my music journey, and endless others. I appreciate all of you!
