We had the good fortune of connecting with Shain Romanowski, better known by his A Certain Energy, and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi A Certain Energy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking has played a huge role within my life and the industry I am in. Without risks there is a high potential of being at a standstill with no potential to grow out of it. I always believed little progress is better than none. Sometimes with those little bits of progress you have to take a little bit of risk whether it is time, finances, or all-around energy honestly. There is no such thing as failure because the route you chose allows you to learn from it even if it sets you back a bit. Analyze the situation and move forward with another plan. Don’t be afraid to standout either. Success does not happen overnight, but the seeds you plant today can flourish into a tree that stands for centuries. That tree being your legacy for others to implement from with their own goals and desires. At the end of the day risks helped mold me into the human being I am today, with many more years to come within my industry.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a recording artist that doesn’t fall into a specific genre. The reason I fall under the recording artist bracket instead of the stereotypical rapper bracket is because I love writing and creating with all sorts of genres whether it is Rock, R&B, Hip-Hop, Metal, Jazz, etc. I started in the industry as a songwriter for others until I became a performer. Song composition is my bread while creating a strong hook and verse(s) is the butter for the spread of the composition. What sets me apart from others is my belief to standout from all directions. Of course artists love to create, but what about the other aspects in the art? Like business? I’m not intimidated by the idea of putting in the long hours just to network. From my aspect this is a seed your planting for the long run. At the end of the day everyone wants one thing, and that’s to be known for your work. You’ll have to put in the work yourself to get there and your team will fall into place along the ride.

I’m excited for what is to come with my career. Throughout the years I’ve networked and connected with entities that I’ve always dreamed of being in direct contact with whether big or small. When I interned for record labels early in my career I used that time wisely to learn exactly how things were done in the business side to mold into what I wanted out of my career. Of course I also chiseled my songwriting and performance during the process as well. None of the chapters in this process was easy. Many will turn you down, or say you don’t have what it takes. I’ve always made sure I never burned those bridges down because you never know when they’ll reach out to you instead when things are on the rise. Being optimistic, adaptable, and a notetaker is what got me to where I am today. Sure there were days where I didn’t think this was possible, but every dreamer goes through that. It’s your choice to keep pushing through. At least that’s what I’ve learned along the way to where I am now and where I am going. Ever since then I’ve worked with some idols of mine including Mickey Factz, Sir Michael Rocks, Kota the Friend, and now have a few tracks in the works with Asher Roth. No goal is unattainable. The only way it becomes unattainable is when you’re in the way. Don’t be an obstacle to yourself.

I want the world to know that A Certain Energy will be a household name in the music industry. Not only a household name, but a name that stands for always believing in yourself when others don’t. You were there for yourself the moment you were born, so it is only right to keep pushing for what you believe in and what you desire in life. The moment you abandon yourself is when you abandon everything you stand for.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to my friends visiting me I would have to show them the sights around Los Angeles, and the whole state of California! First and foremost I’d show them where I am staying at which will be in Santa Monica, California. Right now I’m in Indiana going after my Master’s Degree in Business. From there we’ll be checking out the food destinations. Everyone loves a good five star restaurant, but I believe in the family owned joints! Authentic ramen, Korean BBQ, etc. From there we’d go to a list of places through the week! Other places included for the week would have to be The Getty Center, Santa Monica Pier, Griffith Observatory, Staples Center (I’m a diehard Lakers fan so they have no choice), La Brea Tar Pits, The Grove, and so many other vibes to check out. There is always something to do in Los Angeles, and inspiration to grab from them. Last but not least of course check out the recording studios I work out of. You never know what happens, or who would be making an appearance.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my father, William Romanowski. Without his guidance at a young age with music I wouldn’t have the love for it like I do now. He used to take me to studios back in Asia when he recorded ballads. From there he taught me how to use my diaphragm for performance, study other artists on how they perform from every genre, the whole nine. I’m truly thankful for it. Another shoutout would go out to my best friend that past away unexpectedly, Darian Asher-Layman. I dedicate my career to him. I also wouldn’t be here today without the team I have today. My manager Gemma Pedroza, Adam Uebelhoer (producer that goes by Adam Eazy), and Amir Hussain (owner of the visual media company Sight Beyond Sound).
