Hi Shangmou, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My goal career-wise is to be able to do production design in the union and professionally. The art of constructing and bringing to life intricate cinematic worlds fascinates me immensely. I am naturally drawn to the creative process involved in designing the visual elements of a film or a TV production. The ability to transform concepts and ideas into tangible sets, props, and costumes is both challenging and rewarding. As a production designer, my role goes beyond simply creating visually stunning environments. It requires a comprehensive understanding of storytelling, character development, and mood-setting. Through my expertise in design principles, color theory, and spatial awareness, I aim to enhance the narrative and immerse the audience in the story being told. Each project presents a unique opportunity to craft an engaging and visually captivating experience. My dedication to honing my skills and staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends is unwavering. I consistently seek inspiration from a wide array of sources, including art, architecture, history, and contemporary design. This allows me to bring fresh and innovative ideas to my work, ensuring that each project I undertake is unique and memorable. Collaboration is an integral aspect of the production designer’s role. Working closely with directors, cinematographers, and other members of the creative team, I strive to translate their vision into captivating visual designs. By fostering open communication and embracing a collaborative mindset, I create an environment where ideas can flourish and artistic boundaries can be pushed. My goal as a professional production designer is to create immersive worlds that transport audiences to new realms of imagination. Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love making things. drawing for me is difficult cause I feel like the process of sketching and making it a flat design by hand just doesn’t really click with me. but when I have assets to work with I am much better at placing and shaping things based on art designs. So anything that I have a tactile connection with or can envision in a 3d space is perfect for me. For me grinding out and working to the point where I am known as someone who can get things done is pretty challenging. But it is also fun to be working on many different projects and meeting many different people and seeing how their artistic visions come to life.
for me, a lot of the time the constraint is the limited budget and time. even when we have a larger budget and a team fighting against time is always an uphill battle. sometimes you get absorbed in making your things and time just slips away and you realize 3 days have passed. so I think time management is a very key part of the learning experience.
We are filmmakers and we usually make a lot of short indie films. we try to make something creative at least once a month for ourselves and we are also currently starting up a clothing line that is intended to support filmmakers to make films with the proceeds.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love doing deep dives when I am exploring new cities, I find myself drawn to the vibrant world of art museums and great foodie places. If my friend were to visit, I would take them on a journey through the art museums of Los Angeles. The city is renowned for its magnificent collection of artistic masterpieces showcased in these cultural institutions. My love for the artistic realm extends beyond the conventional museums, as I also seek out the smaller, lesser-known art expos scattered around town. These hidden gems often reveal emerging talents and offer fresh perspectives on various artistic movements. Beyond the realm of art, my personal travel preference lies in immersing myself in the local culinary scene that showcases new and exciting flavors. I am constantly in search of restaurants that embody the spirit of the city and serve dishes that reflect its cultural diversity. Trying new and innovative dishes ignites my sense of adventure and opens up a world of new experiences. For me, a truly inspiring place is one that combines exceptional art and delectable cuisine, which I believe creates an atmosphere of creativity and enrichment. Thus, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring both the captivating art museums and the enticing food scene whenever visiting a new city, as they provide a multifaceted and enriching experience that is bound to leave a lasting impression.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with a myriad of professionals in the field of filmmaking. Among them, my friend Jared stands out as an exceptional individual who has consistently provided invaluable assistance and unwavering support during numerous film shoots. His remarkable expertise as a gaffer and lighting technician has played a pivotal role in elevating the visual aesthetics of my projects. Jared’s keen eye for detail, his ability to swiftly adjust to unpredictable challenges, and his amiable disposition on set have not only contributed to the seamless execution of many a scene but have also cultivated an atmosphere of camaraderie among our team members. It is undeniable that my filmmaking endeavors have been significantly enriched by Jared’s talent, dedication, and collaborative spirit.

My friend Diego is not only a fantastic friend, but also an incredibly talented producer who deeply cares about his crew. His dedication to his craft is evident in the numerous projects he has successfully brought to life. Diego’s kind and genuine nature shines through as he always takes the time to listen, support, and celebrate the achievements of everyone around him. In addition to spearheading innovative ideas in the production industry, he is consistently empathetic and understanding towards the needs of his team members, ensuring that they are comfortable and motivated throughout each project.
